American Idol Recruits Talent From San Francisco and Louisville

By Mary Cavaliere

The next stop was San Francisco, California.  I have to admit I was a little disappointed since this is now my home-base.  None of the talent here really blew me away.   Granted this is where Katherine McPhee started, but it is also the home of William Hung.  Need I say more?

I was disappointed that the judges put through Tatiana Del Toro.  It’s not that she doesn’t sing well.  She has mediocre talent with a persona that is nauseating.  Her psychic can’t be a very good one if she told her she’s going to end up in the Top 12.  It will never happen.

I was happy for Jesus Valenzula that he made it through.  I agree with Simon…..he won’t win, but he’s adorable just like his two boys, so why not treat him to the thrill of his lifetime?

The killer for me was Akilah Askew-Cholston from Oakland.  I work in downtown Oakland and I see the crazies on the street every day.  I’m totally shocked I haven’t seen this crazy lady walking around.  Every morning there’s a homeless man standing a couple blocks from my office building who stands there and sings show tunes acapella.  Every once in a while I give him a few bucks because even though he can’t sing very well, you gotta give him credit for still knowing all the words to songs from West Side Story and Funny Girl.  But as for Akilah…….I won’t be dropping any dollar bills in her cup any time soon.

My favorite was Adam Lambert, who’s currently performing in Wicked in Los Angeles, which I happened to see a few months ago.  He’s got the look and he’s got the voice.  My other favorite from the San Francisco auditions was Kai Kalama.  I liked his voice, I liked his look, and thought he was the perfect son to his sick Mom.  He deserves the chance, that is for sure.

The next stop was Louisville, Kentucky.  This city seemed to have the best voices so far, but then again with editing you’re never really sure who you missed in the auditions that they didn’t air.

We didn’t get to hear much of Felicia Barton or Ryan Johnson, but I heard enough to know these two young folks are going to be enjoyable to watch!

My favorites, however, were Joanna Pacitti, who’s got it all…..a gorgeous voice and a gorgeous face, as well as Leneshe Young who sang an original song with a voice like Beyonce.

The shows this week only spanned the course of an hour instead of two hours so honestly between bad singing and commercials, there wasn’t too much left to be positive about.
