Recap of Amazing Race 13, episode 4 by Arthur Perkins

This episode begins in LaPaz Bolivia and ends in New Zealand. That is covering a lot of the Southern Hemisphere in a giant leap. Teams are released from the pitstop as follows:

Ken/Tina 1233am
Toni/Dallas 1259am
Terence/Sarah104am
Marissa/Brooke 105am
Aja/Ty 106am
Nick/Starr 107am
Anthony/Dan 108am
Kelly/Christy 121am

All teams on finding where that this leg wants them to go reach New Zealand ASAP. Here is where an unusual flight opportunity presents itself and all teams go for it; if they don't they will fall far behind. Most people would assume and the CBS Amazing Race Map(not the one shown during the episode) even shows that the route they take was across the Atlantic Ocean to South Africa and from there somehow across the Indian Ocean to Auckland. That has proven to be wrong. Instead, there are two 13 hour flights from South America across the Pacific Ocean all the way to Auckland. the one teams took goes from Santiago Chile although this episode did not indicate that(they had a straight line from LaPaz to Auckland). So, in order to be on the flight departing to Santiago, teams have until about 9pm to get to Santiago. Fortunately there is a flight from LaPaz that reaches Santiago Chile in 5 hours, departing LaPaz at 1055am. I am guessing all team were on it.  The flight from Santiago reaches Auckland at approximately 355am. Needless to say, all teams have been bunched since they were all on the same flight.

Teams are sent to the North Shore community of Gulf Harbour on the Whangaparoa Peninsula in marked cars. They drive there to unwind a Gordian knot  to get their next clue. That includes a Fast Forward opportunity at the Sky Tower in downtown Auckland. Ken and Tina outdrive Dan and Andrew there and so Dan/Andrew go on. This fast forward was not for the faint of heart as it involved climbing up outside to almost the top to find a gnome. Then that team was taken directly to the pitstop by helicopter.  If not taking that then teams have to drive up Mt.Eden in Auckland, the site of an extinct volcano. A fierce-looking group of about about 44 New Zealand aborigines Maoris (as best I could count them on PAUSE) awaits at a Roadblock. One teammate is selected to match a pattern against the face tattoos of the Maoris until they find the one that matches. I only saw 2 teams have to go back to get a second pattern, so it appeared to be pretty easy. Time to match could be in 5 to 30 minute range.

The next task is blatant product placement, but I will watch Travelocity product placement within reason because Travelocity as a major sponsor several races back kept the Amazing Race alive. Team had to drive to the city Life Hotel hotel in downtown Auckland, go onto a balcony on a high floor and use binoculars to spot Roving Gnomes on or outside of buildings in the immediate vicinity. The next clue sent teams to a DETOUR 2 hours away in the Bay of Plenty Region. Matter of Time at Kiwi360 in Te Puke involves both teammates stomping kiwis in a vat until they produce 12 quarts of juice; then they have to drink one maybe 16 ounce glass each (even with clean feet who would want to do that?). This shows contestants will do almost anything for a shot at the $1 million prize. Matter of Skill involves going to a Blokart race track in Papamoa, assembling a sailcart for each teammate, and navigating them 3 laps around a figure 8 course.

Several teams chose to abandon the juice DETOUR because the stones on the bottom of the vat were hurting their feet. Terence and Sarah and Nick and Starr and Aja and Ty switched detours. Marissa and Brooke appeared to make good progress, but they were running last all day and had to do it just a little faster to stay in the race.

The next clues direct teams to the pitstop on the  Summerhill Recreational Farm in the hills above Tauranga. Finish order there is:

Ken/Tina - they ran an excellent leg and were ahead of the other teams the whole time; since they could not get into the Sky Tower until 0830, it is likely that they finished around 10am
Terence/Sarah - a very good leg with no mistakes except a minor wrong turn; their decision to switch detours was a good one
Kelly/Christy - they rose throughout the day , finishing after an excellent performance at Kiwi360
Toni/Dallas - a good sound leg
Nick/Starr - she had trouble controlling her sailcart and injured her arm when one tipped over and she failed to remember her instructor's "keep your arms in"; then she was shown driving their car to the pitstop with only one good arm; that had to be dangerous
Dan/Andrew - made a number of mistakes starting with trying to compete for the Fast Forward, which maybe cost them only 15 minutes after they abandoned it when they knew Ken/Tina were parked ahead of them
Ty/Aja -  he called her Fidel Castro (code for "dictator") but the footage only shows him being a jerk, not her; they finished well after dark, maybe 645pm
Marissa/Brooke - despite a good kiwi fruit stomping they failed to overtake Aja/Ty and finished well after dark, maybe around 7pm.

Looking ahead, the teams are headed for the Asian continent at a wide range of different times. The team that is most vulnerable is Aja/Ty, who have a history of finishing toward the back of the pack and now that the worse teams are eliminated Aja/Ty are the last-place team. The best flights after the finish time I estimate for Ken/Tina of 1030am plus 2 hours drive back to Auckland International Airport puts them just in time for the best flight to the Asian mainland. No other team could make it or the second best one, as they were over an hour behind Ken and Tina. The best they could do is late afternoon to a stop in Brisbane and then continuing to the mainland. The last remaining team is 2 to 4 hours behind the next latest team and would be taking a late evening flight to the mainland.
