Last Comic Standting
By: Mary Cavaliere

Auditions continued at the Improv in Los Angeles.  The judges this time around were Angela Kinsey and Oscar Nunez, both actors from the hit show The Office.  I wasn’t real clear on why they were putting some of the comics through, but I guess it was easier to make them laugh than it was to make me laugh.

Of course one thing I know is comedy is always funnier in person than on television.  It’s because you get to experience the energy of the room and if the comic is “on” and gets two or three people to laugh, it becomes infectious and before you know it the entire room is doubled over.  When you’re watching television you KNOW the comic is good when you laugh out loud all by yourself.

There were a lot of weird acts in L.A. and no one that really blew me away, but the talent that stood out for me was Eddie Pepitone.  I find New Age humor really funny because I’m one of those individuals who has already explored meditation and yoga and being a vegan, especially since moving to California from the East Coast four years ago.

My heart went out to one contestant that didn’t make it through.  Patrick Ford gave up everything to follow his dream.  He worked as a corporate executive for 20 years at places like Microsoft and Yahoo and is now working on being a stand-up comic, which is what he always wanted to do.  I can certainly relate because I have pretty much done the same thing.  It’s not “practical” to choose a career in the entertainment industry so we don’t follow our hearts and our passions when we’re younger.  We make sure we have a good income to support our children (and in my case my husbands) and we shove that dream down into a dark black hole.  It took me until I was almost 50 to realize I was working my butt off just to buy more “stuff”.  That’s why I’m no longer in I.T. working 70 hours a week for the big bucks.  I’ve simplified my life and work a job with a much lower salary, but that is flexible enough that it allows me to act and write when the opportunity presents itself.  The only reason I’m not doing what Patrick decided to do is because I’m still raising my 12-year old daughter.  But when she goes to college just you wait Hollywood!!!!

Auditions then moved to The Improv in Houston, Texas.  The featured judges were Alfonso Ribeiro who used to be on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire and Neil Flynn from the hit comedy Scrubs.

I don’t understand the logic for how many people they put through.  Why out of all the good talent that they scooped up in Houston, did they only put TWO comics through?  No one person stood out for me enough to comment on except for the biggest boob of the night (no pun intended………well alright……….I’ll admit it……..the pun is intentional).  The woman from Brazil with size DDDD breasts missed the point that we were not laughing with her, we were laughing at her.  She made the dumbest remark of the night.  “I don’t think I’m ready for comedy because I’m a real actress.”   Yea.  I’ll bet she’s just fantastic!
