American Idol Season 7 ~ Episode 38 – May 13, 2008

By: Mary Cavaliere

This week there were three rounds with song selection by the judges, the producers, and the contestants themselves. Here’s how our final three faired on each round:

Round 1 ~ Judges Choice

DAVID ARCHULETA: Paula Abdul chose And So It Goes by Billy Joel ~ The acapella beginning was perfection and so was the rest of the song. Brilliant!

SYESHA MERCADO: Randy Jackson chose If I Aint’t Got You by Alisha Keys ~ Syesha looked absolutely gorgeous and she sang with matching perfection. Syesha is in the zone!

DAVID COOK: Simon Cowel chose The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack ~ It was a great idea on Simon’s part. It was sexy and it was brilliant! Normally it is David Archuleta who makes me cry. This time around it was David Cook.

Round 2 ~ Contestants Choice

DAVID ARCHULETA: With You by Chris Brown ~ This was the first time I have to say I wasn’t impressed. David almost messed up the words and he had a few bad notes. I agree with the judges, this kind of music doesn’t suit him.

SYESHA MERCADO: Fever by Peggy Lee ~ I disagree with all of the judges. It was hot and Syesha totally rocked the performance!

DAVID COOK: Dare You To Move by Switch Foot ~ I hated the beginning. Although it got better vocally as it went along, it was too pitchy for me. It was not one of David’s best.

Round 3 ~ Producers Choice

DAVID ARCHULETA: Longer by Dan Fogelberg ~ I was disappointed in this choice for David. The judges were right. It was too old and archaic. I used to actually sing this song at weddings myself back in the 80’s (which shows you how old it is). Just a note: I don’t sing at weddings anymore – now I just officiate! What I do know is it’s not a difficult song and the producers short-changed David on this one.

SYESHA MERCADO: Hit Me Up by Rhianna ~ Why did Paula have to make the remark that the song didn’t define who she was and that it probably wasn’t enough to get her to the final two? For the first time I have to say Paula was mean. SYESHA DIDN’T CHOOSE THE SONG! She didn’t have control over what would “define” her. Was it done intentionally by the producers to hurt her votes? Not that it was a bad performance because it wasn’t!

DAVID COOK: I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing by Aerosmith ~ The perfect song choice for David. It rocked! But now I have to ask, was it another strategic move on the part of the producers to get David more votes?

I think all three did well enough to make it to the final two. But seeing that it’s mostly young girls voting, I’ll stick to my original prediction that the final two will be David & David!
