Season 7 ~ Episode 24 – March 25, 2008
 By: Mary Cavaliere

The theme for this week’s Idol competition was The Year You Were Born.  Well with most of the contestants being born in the 80’s I don’t know why Idol chose this theme as it was just a repeat of what they did a few weeks ago.  They want the contestants to be original.  How about Idol producers showing a bit of originality too????

I’ve listed the Top 10 with their birth date and astrological birth sign in order of best performance to worst performance (in that order).  Considering some of the things I’ve written about a few of these contestants, you might be surprised at the order they’re in!

David Cook ~ 12/20/82 (Sagittarius) ~ He sang the most original version of BILLY JEAN that I’ve ever heard.  I’m sure everyone else loves the Michael Jackson version of this song like I do, but David did something with it that was unthinkable.  It was a brilliant performance which to me confirmed that even though David may not win, he is definitely going to have a recording career when this competition is over.

Michael Johns ~ 10/20/78 (Libra) ~ He sang WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS.  I’ve been wanting to say something nice about Michael for weeks now, and finally he reeled me in tonight!  I thought it was his best performance ever and I enjoyed every note.  Nice job Michael!

David Archuleta ~ 12/28/90 (Capricorn) ~ He sang YOU’RE THE VOICE.  I’ve never heard this piece before and I wasn’t sure I even liked the song.  But as Paula said, David could sing the phone book and we’d love him!   I still see him as the front-runner, don’t you?

Chikezie ~ 09/11/85 (Virgo) ~ He sang  IF ONLY FOR ONE NIGHT.   I don’t know why Simon seems to have it out for this guy.  I love when he sings a love song and there was nothing “cheesy” about him connecting with the audience during his performance.  In spite of what the judges had to say I believe he’ll still be in the competition come tomorrow night.

Syesha Mercado ~ 01/02/87 (Capricorn) ~ She sang IF I WERE YOUR WOMAN.  I thought she did a nice job with the song and I agree with Randy.  It was the best we’ve heard from her since the beginning of the competition.

Brooke White ~ 06/02/83 (Gemini) ~ She sang EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE.  I thought it was nice with and without the band but nothing about it really wowed me.  I liked the straight hair on her though.  But then again, Brooke could look beautiful with a bag over her head.

Carly Smithson ~ 09/12/83 (Virgo) ~ She sang TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART.  This is one of my all-time favorite songs.  She seemed to be a bit behind or ahead of the music at times and her voice sounded very tight.  I disagree with Randy, it wasn’t the wrong song.  In fact this should have been a perfect song for her had she mastered it.  But she didn’t unfortunately.

Jason Castro ~ 03/25/87 (Aries) ~ He sang HOW FRAGILE.  I’ve never heard this song before and I’m not even sure I wrote the right title down.  It was just o.k. for me. Simon accused Jason of not taking the competition seriously.  I don’t agree with that but I do think both he and Brooke are going to have to step it up a bit to stay in the competition.  They both have great charisma and style and can certainly entertain, but like Amanda Overmyer, they are starting to show they only have one dimension and it could make it difficult for them to win.

Kristy Lee Cook
~ 01/18/84 (Capricorn) ~ She sang GOD BLESS THE USA.  Now this song is one of my favorites and always makes me cry when I hear it sung.  But I didn’t cry tonight because as usual, it was a mess.   When Kristy was talking about how her siblings wanted her to just be quiet while singing in the car I thought “that’s exactly how I feel about her singing kids”.    I’m placing her second to last because the last note of the song was impeccable.  But other than that, it was truly forgettable.

Ramiele Malubay ~ 09/06/87 (Virgo) ~ She sang ALONE one of my favorite songs by Heart.  Unfortunately she was once again flat during a good portion of the song and the last part was difficult to listen to.  I truly believe Ramiele is talented but she’s been given a dozen chances so it’s probably time for her to leave the show.  She is still very young.  Maybe with the some training she can learn to control her pitch better.  As for winning, it probably isn’t going to happen.

I won’t bother telling you who I think should go home because you all know by now Kristy Lee Cook is my first choice.  But something tells me America is going to keep her around a while longer and it will probably be Ramiele to leave this time around. You can read more of Mary’s television blogs at www.myspace.com/italiangirl57
