Fox has renewed your favorite artistic competition show! That's right, So You Think You Can Dance is back in summer 2015 for it's 12th season! But there's a new look and a twist. The show will now be 'street vs stage'. This means that the Top 20 will be comprised of 10 street dancers and 10 stage dancers.
Throughout the auditions the dancers who advance will join one of two teams. The stage dancers are those trained in contemporary, ballet, jazz or tap whereas the street dancers will include hip-hop, animation and breaking. Throughout the process, the judges along with a mentor (previously known as all-stars), will eliminate the dancers. Then when the Top 20 is reached the show will go live and they will be challenged weekly to perform a variety of styles with the choreographers. Dancers from each genre will be eliminated each week.
The reason for the change? Not only did they want to bring something fresh to the audience, but dancers who aren't professionally trained become easily overwhelmed. "What we thought was why don't we give them an opportunity of getting through and then they've got the opportunity to train a little bit... to relax a little bit, and then once we get to the top 20, that's when we hit them with, 'OK, now you've got to do all the different styles'... where the stage kids are given hip-hop and the hip-hop kids are given stage dance to do," said executive producer, co-creator (and our favorite judge) Nigel Lythgoe in the Yahoo News article. Now everyone is on the same playing field and street dancing may get a new appreciation.
