This adventure is in Kodiak Archipelago, Alaska with two new contestants. This time we have a man and a woman! Will this be the moment that proves that women are what holds everything together in a survival atmosphere? Probably not.
Henry is a 47 year old single father of three from Chico, CA. He is a wildlife biologist for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. He considers himself conservative, quiet, and void of vulgarity. Enter vulgar lady, Laura from Plattsburgh, NY. She is a volunteer weather observer for the National Weather Service and has been out of the US Air Force for 20 years.
The pair has 10 days to reach their rescue point and will fight freezing temperatures, cold water and the largest population of Kodiak bears (9 feet tall, 1 ton, apex predators). Their 10 pound tether wont be removed until they reach their extraction point. But first they need to choose three things to keep with them to aid in their survival. They chose a flint, a large knife and a can to boil water in.
They have 48 miles to their extraction point and the bears are just out of hibernation. The only way out is to swim twice in the frigid 38 degree water. The first time Henry offers to carry Laura and it seems as if she'll drown him. The second time they build a raft for their belongings and swim in their underwear to keep their gear dry. Smart but holy cow that must be cold! Think she's using him and is completely useless yet? Well, at night she uses him as a bed and pillow. And he's chivalrous enough to let her. (Kudos on those killer shelters every night, Henry.)
They understand their danger amongst the bears most of all when the nearby base camp fires off a warning shot to a mama bear to scare her off. They even have to compete with the bears for food which does not work in their favor. So what does Hero Henry do? He makes a fishing line out of a bracelet and a hook out of Laura's hair pin. And it works! Fueled up and ready to make it to their extraction point, Laura and Henry make their way to the salmon filled river amongst at least 6 bears. Regretting not picking that bear spray now?
Proud moments all around and new friends made, they've made it!. "I'm ready for a hot shower," exclaims Henry. "Yeah, you guys smell like a dog shit burrito, dude," replies the pilot.
