Season 16 of Dancing With the Stars closes tonight, with the mirror ball trophy finding its way into the hands of a new champion. Coming into the night, Kellie and Derek and Zendaya and Val had a slight edge over Aly and Mark and Jacoby and Karina, but it's all too close to call. After a night of recaps, guest stars, and, yes, one FINAL competitive dance, one of them will be declared the winner.
The Gang's All Here: The opening number features the entire Season 16 cast, starting with the Pros, who are then joined by the Stars. Andy's still having fun, Victor still looks ridiculous, and Wynonna is riding a Segway. It's nice to see nothing's changed, really.
Finale Recap: The judges give their critique for the show, all agreeing that the final performances were amazing. Carrie Ann calls Aly fearless, Len thought Kellie's freestyle was beautiful, and Len and Bruno agree that Zendaya is an amazing talent. Bruno thinks Jacoby's routine overshadowed him, but Len loves him. Carrie Ann predicts that this will be the most exciting finale ever.
Encore Freestyle: The fans have chosen to see Kellie and Derek's freestyle again. I wonder if that's any indication of who tonight's winner will be?
Fourth Place: As the final couples sit waiting to hear their fates, Aly and Mark are eliminated. Aly calls Dancing With the Stars the best experience of her life. Ha - she wastes 15 years training to win a gold medal at the Olympics, and it's three months dancing that are the BEST experience of her life!
Ladies' Night: Aly, Kellie, and Zendaya join the female Pros in a special performance showcasing the talents of all the ladies on the dance floor.
She's a Singer, Not a Dancer: As Wynonna told us, she's been looking forward to her chance to come back to the show to sing - that's what she does best. Tonight she performance "I Want to Know What Love Is", accompanied by Tony and Peta on the dance floor. "That's what I do," she says as the audience applauds.
Real Housewife of DWTS: Lisavanderpump returns doing what SHE does best - oh, no, not dancing. FLIRTING. She does a quick Fox Trot with Gleb before Len leads her around the ballroom.
Saddest Moment: Remember when Dorothy took Tristan out of the competition due to injury? That wasn't the saddest moment for me. The saddest moment for ME happened tonight, when it was revealed that, due to injury, Tristan would not be able to join Dorothy for her finale performance. She dances instead with Henry...and Kristi Yamaguchi? Yep, Kristi and her partner waltz alongside Dorothy, and it's a pretty touching moment to see these two ice queens sharing a dance floor.
My Favorite Loser: Surprisingly for me, Andy Dick was one of my favorite dancers this season, and his dramatic reaction to misunderstanding what it means to dance on the finale was really funny. Their Alice in Wonderland themed jazz routine is as terrific as it was the first time, but...well, I'm sorry Andy. You're still not gonna win.
Reality Finale Staple: So apparently, if your reality show finale happens this spring, Psy has to be a special guest. He performed "Gentleman" tonight. It's about as entertaining as it was last week when he did the same thing on American Idol. And as if that wasn't enough, Pitbull is there too, to perform a song that I don't know the name of because I'm relatively sure none of it was in English.
Last Dance: The remaining contestants had a short time to rehearse their "instant dance," not finding out the music until showtime. Jacoby and Karina have a Salsa, while Kellie and Derek and Zendaya and Val will both perform a Jive.
Jacoby and Karina: It's a pretty good Salsa, especially when you take into account the number of times Jacoby had to pull his suspenders up without screwing up. Len thinks his dancing has a naturalism about it. "Jacoby, for me, you're a breath of fresh air," he says. Bruno tells Jacoby he has the "spice of life" - "I could watch you any time." Carrie Ann says it was "The dance of a champion."
Total Score: 30 (10-10-10)
Kellie and Derek: Kellie looks like a pro out there, and her Jive with Derek is super fun to watch. Bruno agrees with me - he tells her she reminds him of Julianne Hough. "Unbelievably wonderful!" Carrie Ann calls them the Wonder Twins, and Len tells Kellie she's "the bees knees, my mama's pajamas" and...well, he really liked it.
Total Score: 30 (10-10-10)
Zendaya and Val: The final dance of Season 16 belongs to the wonderkid Zendaya and her grumpy "older brother" Val. It's a terrific Jive and a really cute routine - a great way to end the competition. Carrie Ann tells her she's made every dance special - "it's been a joy." Len commends her for putting character in every dance, doing all those little "twinkly bits." Bruno says she has "pitch perfect performer instincts." Both Len and Bruno predict her star is on the rise.
Total Score: 30 (10-10-10)
While the Votes are Tallied: Former American Idol Jessica Sanchez is in the ballroom to perform "Feel This Moment" as highlights from the season are played for the contestants. This is weird. Pitbull performed earlier, but someone else is singing his song...weirdly? Still, it's always touching to watch these montages and the way the couples interact with each other.
The Mirror Ball Trophy Goes To: After Jacoby and Karina are awarded 3rd Place, it's no surprise to see Kellie and Derek and Zendaya and Val as the final two standing. After the final votes are counted, the mirror ball trophy goes to...
KELLIE AND DEREK!
Final Thoughts: If Zendaya and Val had won, I know I would've been disappointed that it wasn't Kellie and Derek, yet I still find myself disappointed that it wasn't Zendaya and Val. It's a great moment for both pairs, as the confetti streamers fly and all the dancers celebrate with Kellie and Derek hoisted on shoulders. All in all, despite being frontrunners the entire season, both pairs gave us a lot of entertaining routines that kept things interesting. As the show closes, Brooke and Tom promise that lots of "exciting" changes are coming to Dancing With the Stars, so it'll be interesting to see what the show looks like when it returns in September.
