Melanie Martinez on The Voice Season 3

by Todd Betzold

Melanie Martinez was that girl that impressed us with her Blind Audition on The Voice with her take on Britney Spears' "Toxic." She was different and unique and those qualities shined through all season. She has the Indie-vibe that I love and has gained a lot of fans over the course of the season, so we should be hearing a lot from this girl in the future. Today she talked with RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about her experiences on The Voice this season.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What made you initially try out for The Voice?
A. Melanie: It was definitely a random thing I wanted to do. I tried out for American Idol when I was 15 and I didn't make it past the first open call. I didn't expect to make the open call for The Voice. It was a random thing my family and friends made me do.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: You were the youngest contestant left this season. What was it like going through this whole process at 17 years old?
A. Melanie: I'm actually really happy this was the first thing I have ever really done. Being so young, I got to learn from such amazing artists that helped me grow as an individual. They've been doing this for years and they gave me tips and advice and helped me out a lot.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: You sang "Crazy" this week by Gnarls Barkley. Were you nervous singing a song by Cee Lo Green?
A. Melanie: Yeah (laughs). That was a crazy moment for me. I didn't think I would be nervous, but when I saw Cee Lo my heart dropped. It was definitely scary. I've been watching the show for the past two seasons and every time someone does a song by one of the coaches I get scared for them (laughs).

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: You were sent home last night. What do you think it was about your performances this week that maybe didn't connect with the people like you have been? Would you have done anything different?
A. Melanie: I think everything happens for a reason and this is definitely not the end for me. I wouldn't have changed anything. What if I would have changed something and didn't make it that week? I think I did the best I could. We are our worst critics.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: Adam Levine was your coach this season. What was it like working with him?
A. Melanie: He was definitely like a big brother to me and still is. I am really proud to say I was on Team Adam. He's been a great coach and he's given me great advice.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What was your favorite moment this season?
A. Melanie: The last performance with Nicholas, "Criminal." It is a song we both wanted to do all season and never got the chance to. It was on both of our lists, so they gave it to us as a duet. I really admire Nick as a singer and an artist, so I was happy to do that sing with him and was by far the best moment on stage.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: With only four singers left now, does anyone stand out to you as a possible winner?
A. Melanie: Absolutely. I am going to be rooting for Cassadee Pope. She is the only lady left and I really admire her for staying true to who she is the whole season. I think that is really important and I hope she wins.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: You have a lot of fans out there supporting you. Anything you want to say to them reading this article?
A. Melanie: I am so thankful for all the people that have supported me. It means the world to me. I never thought I'd be able to do something like this, so to all the people that are really, really young and don't think they can do something like this, they definitely can. Just work at it.
