Cody Belew on The Voice Season 3

by Todd Betzold

The singers brought their A-Game last week on The Voice, as we saw some amazing performances from most of the Top 10 for Season 3. America still surprises me every week with the way they are voting, and not in a bad way. They are keeping the truly good singers in the competition and that makes me happy, but as we get closer and closer to the finale the shocking and sad results are bound to happen.

To take some time away from the Top 8 tonight, we start the show with 50 Cent singing with Adam Levine, who debut their song "My Life." It is all about promoting the coaches this season and I am over it!

Amanda Brown (Team Adam) - "Someone Like You" by Adele
Amanda is taking a journey with this show and making decisions for herself for the first time in her life and they are making a bold decision with this song and giving it a rock edge. This was awesome and I love this girl. She has such a strong voice and she put the edge on this song and has such strong vocals. I loved it! Adam said it is a risk to do an Adele song and it didn't resemble the original version at all. She always impresses everyone and tonight she knocked it out of the park.

Cody Belew (Team Cee Lo) - "Somebody To Love" by Queen
Cee Lo thinks he can pass the torch from Freddie Mercury to Cody and it is a huge risk. I think this was a great song choice for Cody and the production was amazing and perfect and his voice sounded so good. I love this guy and am so rooting for him. Cee Lo said what a wonderful job and proud of his growth. He loves their partnership and making some quantum leaps and he found a good friend in him.

Time for a group performance, as Dez Duron, Melanie Martinez, Cassadee Pope and Terry McDermott take the stage to sing "Move Along." This song sounded good for Cassadee and Melanie's voices. Terry is good, but it still shocks me he is here still. Anyone else?

Terry McDermott (Team Blake) - "Over" by Blake Shelton

Blake wants Terry's version to erase his own version and this song is more fitting for Terry than it was for himself. It started a little rough for me, but he improved when the song started to kick in. It was a more boring performance from Terry and I think he might be in trouble tonight. Blake said he performed that song the way he always wished he could and it is what I wanted him to do and he just became the real deal.

On a side note, does anyone notice when Christina gives her critique that she is always looking down at something. Maybe she has someone sending her notes to the red button in front of her for her to say?

Melanie Martinez (Team Adam) - "Too Close" by Alex Clare
Melanie is going through a breakup right now, so she is showing that side of her through this song. This is the Melanie that I first fell in love with during her initial audition. She took on "Toxic" and sounded amazing and now she took on "Too Close" and sounded even better. I love her Indie-style voice and this was such an emotional performance. Adam said he loves seeing an artist up there that is concerned with every aspect of the performance and he loves how she presents herself.

Dez Duron (Team Christina) - "You Smile" by Justin Bieber
Dez has some pressure on him this week, as he is the final artist for Team Christina, but the girls like him too much to send him home quite yet. I was so impressed with his performance last week, but this one was just there for me. Nothing special with it and he sounded like Michael Buble up there, which is a good thing. I just was not blown away by anything he did. Christina said he killed it, killed it, killed it. He revamped that song and made it something special.

Trevin Hunte (Team Cee Lo) - "Greatest Love Of All" by Whitney Houston
Trevin had some fun last week when he sang an Usher song, but they are going back to his forte and take on a Whitney Houston song. He has the song made for ballads and I am sure this will be no different. It was a good performance, but I was bored with it. It never went anywhere for me and was just a safe song choice and nothing special. Cee Lo said what a wonderful performance and he is certain that Ms. Whitney would be proud.

Another team performance, as Amanda Brown, Cody Belew, Nicholas David and Trevin Hunte take the stage to sing "Any Way You Want It." This song fit Cody and Amanda's voices very well. Good to see them shine bright.

Nicholas David (Team Cee Lo) - "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye
Bill Withers joins them in the studio during rehearsal and tells him he loved his performance last week, which was a special moment for Nicholas. This man is brilliant. It was another perfect song choice and it shows off his vocals so well. This guy has so much soul and is a star and I love that America recognizes that every week by voting him in. Cee Lo said music is to imitate life and encourage the living. There are some serious things going on there and what would life be without good music that can be a healing property.

Cassadee Pope (Team Blake) - "Are You Happy Now" by Michelle Branch
Cassadee went to #1 on iTunes last week, which was crazy for her to see and she needs to keep that momentum going strong. She thinks this would be a song she would release as a single. I think she did a great job, but did a great job sounding just like Michelle Branch. There was nothing special about the performance, so I was a little disappointed. Blake said last week was about her laying her heart on the stage and this week she showed America that she is one of the best singers in this competition and she sang the crap out of that song.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
