After watching the devastation from Hurricane Sandy for the past two days and being without power myself for a good part of it, I can say with complete, genuine, unsarcastic honesty that I've never been happier to see the twirly mirror ball intro for Dancing With the Stars: All Stars. And to make it even better, two of my favorite artists will be special guests, making this one elimination show I won't be tempted to forward through at all!
For the many people who weren't able to watch Country Night in the ballroom, the standout performance chosen by the judges for an encore routine comes from Apolo and Karina, performing a Viennese Waltz. It's dreamy and gorgeous, just like I'm sure it was yesterday. Even though I didn't get to see it. (Not bitter.)
Here's a heads up - Election Day is next week, so we won't have a results show. Originally they planned to eliminate someone Monday based on votes from this week and the judges' scores, but because so many people were affected by the storm and couldn't vote, we will NOT have an elimination next week, and scores will carry over to the week after.
And now it's time for results, starting with the lowest scoring couples. Kelly and Val, at the bottom of the leader board, are the first up, and they promise if we keep them around, they'll show us their boobies. Then they also both realize we've already seen their boobies. Oops. Emmitt and Cheryl are the second lowest scorers of the night, and Cheryl tells us she wants to stick around to for the "dance fusion". Emmitt looks less excited. In a season where every result can be considered a shocker, both couples are declared safe, despite their low scores.
Jason Mraz, performing "I Won't Give Up", is up next. Let me assure you, he's as terrific live on tv as he is live in person, and that's the same as live on my ipod. With a beautiful dance by Mark and Chelsie accompanying him, I only wish I had a giant soft pretzel to really complete my "concert" experience.
In the skybox, Val and Kelly are surprised and happy to be safe and had their bags packed to go home. Brooke reminds Sabrina and Louis that it was in this week when Sabrina was previously eliminated, but Sabrina is still feeling lucky to be dancing in the competition at all. And then Derek reveals another "shocker" - he injured a vertebrae and will be unable to dance with Shawn next week. Mark will be taking his place, at least for a week, dancing with his old partner.
Derek and Shawn are also the next up for results, and they're taking it personally that Len has scored them in the 8-8.5 range two weeks in a row. Gilles tells us he felt naked dancing his solo without Peta, while Kirstie and Maks revel in her best scores of the competition. So who of this group is safe until at least next week? How about all three of them. That's right, all five of last night's lowest scoring couples are safe.
After a segment with the stars talking about the continued pressures of the competition, the Macy's Stars of Dance take the floor. Choreographed by RJ Durrell and Nick Florez, the dancers are in candy colored dresses that seem inspired by Marie Antoinette, performing a dramatically impressive high-energy routine.
Next week's theme will be fusion routines - one piece of music that challenges dancers to perform two different dances. Once again, the teams will be picking for each other, starting with the lowest scoring couple, who will be assigned another couple based on names picked from a mirror ball bowl. Here are those results:
Kirstie and Maks picked Tango/Cha Cha for Melissa and Tony
Kelly and Val picked Argentine Tango/Samba for Gilles and Peta
Emmitt and Cheryl picked Tango/Foxtrot for Sabrina and Louis
Apollo and Karina picked Quick Step/Samba for Kirstie and Maks
Melissa and Tony picked Tango/Paso Doble for Shawn and Derek/Mark
Shawn and Derek picked Rumba/Samba for Emmitt and Cheryl
Sabrina and Louis picked Cha Cha/Foxtrot for Kelly and Val
Gilles and Peta picked Cha Cha/Paso Doble for Apollo and Karina
Before we get any more results, it's time for some TSWIZZLE! Taylor Swift is in the ballroom to perform "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." I'll resist the urge (again) to get all fangirly, so I'm gonna need a moment here.... Ok. With the troupe performing and lots of red and hearts flashing all over the floor, it looks a little like a Valentine card exploded, but she's still my favorite. Like...EVER. Go get her album.
So the final three couples to get results had the highest scores of the night (including a pair of perfects), but one of them will be eliminated this week. Melissa and Tony, Sabrina and Louis, and Apolo and Karina are all beyond excited for their amazing performances, so DWTS is billing this as a "shocking" elimination. Aren't all the All Stars good though? Or at least entertaining? Maybe even beloved by fans? Every elimination is shocking now.
When Melissa and Tony are declared safe, it comes down to the two couples with perfect scores. That, I guess, is sufficiently shocking. As the pressure mounts, Sabrina and Louis are called out. Sabrina is eliminated, in the same week of competition as her first season. Apolo and Karina are safe.
Sabrina and Louis are leaving the competition on a high note, and she certainly had a good run as the fans' choice to be an All Star.
I can confidently predict that your favorite will NOT be eliminated next week (because there's no results show - see what I did there?), which means the fusion dances should be a lot of fun to watch. The couples seem to do a little better without the red light of elimination glaring down on them. Tune in to see what they do with their latest challenge!
