The Voice Season 3

by Todd Betzold

The teams are filled and we have 16 acts from each team that will battle it out on The Voice to see who makes it to the live shows! The twist this season: the singer that loses the Battle Round can get stolen by another coach, which is about to make this round even more interesting. The mentors this season will be for Team Adam: Mary J. Blige, for Team Blake: Michael Buble, for Team Cee Lo: Rob Thomas and for Team Christina: Billie Joe Armstrong (pre-rehab days).

Team Blake: Casey Muessigmann vs. Terry McDermott - "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas
Blake said they both have big voices and sang classic rock songs for their audition, so that is why he paired them. Casey came in with a country twist, but Michael Buble told him to put more rock into it and they loved the change. They both seem confident going into the battle, but who will come out on top? They start out strong and sound great singing together. Terry has a great voice and sounds good with rock, but Casey had so much confidence onstage and sounded great. I didn't know about this battle, but it was very good and strong. Blake said Casey won't back down from any challenge and did a great job. For Terry, he said the challenge for him is Blake is a country guy and he can relate more to country. In a shocker, Blake said Terry knows his voice more and he picks Terry. No coaches steal Casey and he heads home.

Team Adam: Bryan Keith vs. Collin McLoughlin - "Santeria" by Sublime
How cool is it to see Mary J. Blige on this show? She is amazing! They told Collin he needs to feel more emotion in his song, but has perfect pitch. Bryan was struggling with the nuances of the long notes, even though the song was more tailored for him. Okay here we go: Collin is trying to be this tough guy up there and looks like a dork at moments, but his voice sounds very strong. Bryan seems to be laidback and chill and like bored to be there. That makes me want to choose Collin big time! Adam said he liked how they both had different approaches to the song and it is down to who interpreted the song more towards what Adam was looking for. Adam goes with Bryan and as Collin tells his last words for Adam, Blake and Cee Lo hit their steal button! The first steal of the season, as they both state their case why Collin should chose them. After some thought, he goes with Team Blake.

Team Cee Lo: Diego Val vs. JR Aquino - "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield
JR comes in strong to the rehearsal, but Diego is nervous and is not ready for the song he is not familiar with. He looks silly compared to JR. In the second rehearsal, Diego had improved, but he was still having some issues with the lyrics. Cee Lo wants to see an attitude adjustment from JR and wants him to be more rough. JR does a great job with the song and does show that change for him. He was outshined by JR big time. Cee Lo said they brought so much character and charisma to the song. He said he can do more with Diego and he chooses Diego. Even though JR was stronger in my eyes, none of the judges steal him and he is headed home.

Team Christina: De'Borah vs. Nelly's Echo - "Message In A Bottle" by The Police
Nelly's Echo starts out strong with the song, but De'Borah is not familiar with the song since she grew up in the church. Billie Joe said he thinks this could be the best battle of the whole show. The next day at rehearsal, De'Borah is still struggling with the song and lyrics. Nelly's Echo is worried because De'Borah still hasn't show Christina her best yet with this song. Nelly's Echo starts out strong and De'Borah seems to be in the background, but when her solo comes she takes over and is very powerful and hit some huge notes and is so strong. Christina said she loved how they were both experimental and De'Borah reminds her of Lauryn Hill and she loves how Nelly's Echo is so unique. Christina goes with De'Borah. No steals for Nelly's Echo, so he is headed home.

Team Blake: 2Steel Girls vs. Gracia Harrison - "Sin Wagon" by Dixie Chicks
This is the battle of the country acts, as the mother and daughter duo take on the yodeler. Gracia is nervous, especially going up against two voices. The Mom is worried about it being fast-paced and she is more of a soulful singer and Blake said they aren't meshing well together. Gracia's nerves left her when she hit the stage because she was very strong on stage and throwing out the sass. The daughter was very good, but the Mom just looked awkward up there...taller and older and weird to me. Blake said Gracia was comfortable up there and 2Steel Girls sounded great together, but Gracia brought more confidence and he picks her. No steals for 2Steel Girls.

Team Cee Lo: Amanda Brown vs Trevin Hunte - "Visions of Love" by Mariah Carey
Trevin is letting his insecurities show when they first meet with Cee Lo and Rob and he is showing his nerves. Amanda is super strong with Mariah and I am liking her, even though I loved Trevin in the auditions. NBC has been hyping this one up all show, so this one is probably going to blow you away! This was an amazing battle. They both can hit those huge notes and have great range in their voice. They sang amazing together and got a standing ovation from the whole studio. Before Cee Lo even makes his decision, the other coaches are already fighting for the person Cee Lo doesn't pick. Cee Lo thinks that Trevin will take him further and goes with him. The other three coaches all hit their buttons to steal Amanda away. She gets to choose and she goes with Team Adam. Did he just steal the winner away from Cee Lo?

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
