After long a long anticipation-filled wait, four of the most talented dancers and choreographers in the industry are coming together on television to prove they have All The Right Moves to make it in this business. That's right, tomorrow we begin to witness the journey of Travis Wall, Teddy Forance, Nick Lazzarini and Kyle Robinson as they work to make their newly formed dance company SHAPING SOUND a success on Oxygen's newest show All The Right Moves.
To promote tomorrow's premiere, the four dancers strutted their stuff at Broadway Dance Center in New York City for a workshop with, let's say, a mixed bag of dancers. And there I was, thrown in the mix.
All four made sure to take pictures and chat with the reporters and dancers in the studio before leading us in a fun and energetic disco warm-up. But they didn't' let the disco fever stop them there. Because of the varying levels of experience in the room, they taught us a simple and endlessly fun disco routine that included everything from partnering work to booty-shakin' to good old fashioned jazz hands.
I partnered up with another reporter in the room who seemed to know what she was doing on the dance floor. After an hour of busting our best moves, the four guys chose US to dance in their "Super Star" group. We improved arm-in-arm with Teddy, Nick, Kyle and Travis before running the routine one last time. Best. Night. Ever.
By the end of the class, it was clear everyone was Disco-ed out, but the dancers graciously stayed to meet, talk and give a sweaty bear hug to everyone in the room.
After speaking with all four guys, it was clear they were all very proud of how far they have come with SHAPING SOUND and were ecstatic to accomplish it all with each other.
Here are some of the highlights:
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: You four have been through so much together. What has been the most surprising part of the journey so far?
A. Nick: Well, it's pretty surprising that we haven't killed each other yet! No, it's really great that we've all been able to have a life-changing experience together. And to be able to experience that with your three best friends is amazing.
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: Starting any company carries a lot of obstacles. What are some of the difficulties you guys came across?
A. Nick: The time crunch was really tough. For TV, everything is on a time crunch. We only rehearsed for about a month for our show and there were a lot of obstacles getting there. It ended up costing about 4 times what we originally though, and so we had to think of a lot of creative ways to finance our first show...some of which you'll see on the first episode.
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: Any spoilers you can give me?
A. Nick: Oh you know, begging, panhandling. Things of the like.
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: Who has most inspired you in your dance career?
A. Nick: I always go back to the early greats. Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse. The legends. I always learn from them.
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: In any situation, it can be tough working with your best friends. What's been the most difficult part for you?
A. Kyle: It's hard that I can't stay mad at my friends! We definitely get on each other's nerves, but it's all part of the creative process. There's a lot of pressure and egos getting thrown around, and everyone has different filters in expressing themselves. Whenever you're around your best friends so much, you definitely learn a lot of new things about them?
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: Okay, what are some new things you've learned about these guys from working together?
A. Kyle: Teddy has two false bottom teeth. They just never came in. Nick has the smelliest farts. And Travis loves to pickles.
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: How would you say you've changed from this experience?
A. Kyle: I've become a lot more confident in my own voice. There are so many opportunities and options in LA that you want to be involved with all of them. I've also become a lot more comfortable creating movement. Out in LA, it's like I'm the new kid again, so that was cool. Although, I must say, it's great to be back in the city of my Alma Matter. [Editor's note: Kyle is a 2009 graduate of Julliard)
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: Where does the name SHAPING SOUND come from?
A. Travis: We are visual musicians. We shape sound with our bodies, so we thought the name suited us.
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: Your choreography is absolutely stunning and really changing the industry. Where do you draw inspiration from?
A. Travis: I get inspiration from a lot of my dreams-I have really vivid dreams. The piece from Dancing With the Stars [that got Emmy-nominated] came from when I was in an airplane. The ride was kind of bumpy and when I looked outside I saw this crazy cloud formations that looked like people could dance on and jump off of. So that's where that came from.
Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: If you could say 3 words to a dancer trying to break into the industry, what would they be?
A. Travis: Booty shakin'! No not booty shakin'. Consistency, risk and confidence. If you're not confident we can smell it a mile away. Always come ready.
All The Right Moves premieres tomorrow, Tuesday July 31st, at 9pm ET on Oxygen.
