Charlie Grogan from The Bachelorette Season 8

by Gina Scarpa

This week on The Bachelorette, Emily took the guys to Bermuda where she enjoyed a one on one date with Doug, a two on one date where she kept John and eliminated Nate, and a group date where half of the guys had to head back to the hotel after losing a sailing race. Among those guys was Charlie, who has not had much of a chance to form a long lasting connection with Emily. At the rose ceremony, she decided that she didn't see a future with him or Michael and sent them home. Charlie spoke to RealityWanted and reporters in a conference call about his time getting to know Emily, his opinion of the other guys, and whether or not his elimination was a surprise.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: It seems kind of obvious who Emily's favorites are. She had hardly spent any time with people like you, John, Michael, Alejandro... did you feel like she had her favorites and did that put pressure on you?
A. Charlie: You know what? Not really, because I did spend some time with her on the group dates and obviously, they can't show everything that they record. I had my fair share of time with her. I mean, to answer your question, I felt like I spent enough time with her on the group dates to where I should maybe still be hanging around.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Were you surprised that you were sent home or did you have a feeling it might be coming?
A. Charlie: It's hard to tell because I really don't know what was going through her mind. I know she maybe had some favorites going into that evening. That's a question maybe she can answer for you. I felt comfortable going into that evening because of the time I did spend with her and the conversations we did have. Some of the guys that were left, I didn't feel were as suitable for her as maybe I could have been. It was a shock for me.

Q. You seemed really upset after you lost the boat competition. What was going through your mind and do you think you were overreacting?
A. Charlie: [Laughs] I think me, Sean, Travis, and Chris were all upset because we have this competitive side to us. I've played sports my whole life and I've never really cried during a loss. I think I was disappointed with myself because I knew on paper, we had these guys beat. It was a testosterone, male thing. I don't remember being that upset on the ride home. It was a 45 minute drive back to the hotel. I don't know if I can say I was that upset.

Q. Can you give us some thoughts on two of the more controversial guys, Kalon and Ryan?
A. Charlie: I got along with Ryan a lot, off camera. I never got involved with the controversies in the house. Kalon, I never really got along with him as much as the other guys. He was very standoffish. He wouldn't hang out with a lot of the guys off camera when we were playing games or when we were having conversations. I can tell that he had a lot more going on than we knew.

Q. Do you think if your team had won the race and you got that extra time with Emily, that you would've stuck around longer?
A. Charlie: I'm not really sure but I think I could've talked to her more about personal things. Every time we did have conversations, there was never the time or place to get into those things. I didn't know her background, her story. I could go online or read about it now but on The Bachelorette, I wanted to hear it from her. I think Bermuda would be a more intimate environment to pick her brain. I think that would've carried me on into the next round, I guess. Yeah, I mean, it is what it is and I never had that one on one, intimate opportunity to really share those kind of stories. It was always more group dates, a lounge, maybe a bar... there's a time and place to share those feelings.

Q. During the Muppet Show date, you told Emily you were uncomfortable doing comedy on stage because you were working on your speech. Can you elaborate on that a little more?
A. Charlie: That's a good question. To this day, I still go to speech therapy. There's still a lot of things I have to work on. There's still a lot of words I can't pronounce, so that was difficult. What made me decide to approach her was that I was having a hard time pronouncing the punch line. It was stressing me out because I didn't wanna ruin such an important event. The audience doesn't know my story. I just wasn't ready. I got called on stage for the Miss Piggy thing and jeez! I pulled it off, but it was tough.

Q. You mentioned that you believed there were some people who deserved to go home instead of you. Can you give us some names?
A. Charlie: I never really name names. When The Men Tell All episode comes out, I'll be a little more adamant to point fingers and say, "You're a jackass." I don't wanna name names because I don't wanna stir the pot but I think we all know who we like and who we don't like.

Q. You said you had some moments that didn't make it to broadcast. Can you share a special moment that we didn't get to see?
A. Charlie: I sat down with her one night and let her know I was in it for the long haul. I was a little scared because I missed home and missed my family. I left everything behind for this journey and I would be there for as long as she would allow me to be there. I wanted to form a friendship with her that could maybe turn into something else. I was never the kind of guy to just fall in love at first sight. I'm sure a lot of guys on the show are feeling that way. In my mind, it wasn't love at first sight. It was like, she's attractive, she's cool, let me get to know her, let me be friends and joke around with her, and let's see if a relationship can form out of this. I was going in baby steps. With how fast the show goes, I maybe needed to skip a few steps.
