It's been quite a ride for Jermaine Jones this season on American Idol and now, it seems his journey is about to come to an abrupt halt once and for all. The judges originally passed on putting Jermaine through to the Top 24 but had a change of heart and added him in as the 13th male contestant. His first performance for America's vote, "Dance With My Father" earned a standing ovation from the judges. He was voted into the Top 13 by the viewers and survived last week's elimination. Now, it's being reported that tonight, Idol will announce that Jermaine has left the competition for allegedly lying to producers about his past.

According to TMZ, Jermaine isn't exactly the gentle giant he's been claiming to be. He was arrested twice last year, with one of those incidents involving violence, and still has outstanding warrants. Jermaine also told producers that his father has not been part of his life, but his father called TMZ to say that couldn't be further from the truth. His father was also at the March 8 taping of the show to watch his son perform. Besides Jermaine's past, he also revealed on his Twitter that he would be kicked off the show before American Idol could make an official statement, writing, "Awww I will no longer b on the show." The Washington Post states that the tweet has since been removed, and his account was deleted.

This is not the first time an Idol contestant has been disqualified or kicked out of the competition. Season 2 finalists Corey Clark and Jared Andrews were both sent home by Idol producers - Corey for hiding his arrest for battery and Jared for pending charges against him. Season 4 finalist Mario Vasquez dropped out of Idol on his own accord but some say it was due to sexual harassment charges filed by an Idol employee. During the Hollywood round of Season 5, brothers Terrell and Derrell Brittenum were dismissed after identity theft charges surfaced. In Season 8, Joanna Pacitti was removed from the Top 36 due to her close relationships with Idol execs. And Season 10's Chris Golightly were dismissed after producers found out that he had a previous record deal.

Perhaps most famously, Season 2 finalist Frenchie Davis was kicked off of the show after topless photos of her were found online, yet Season 6's Antonella Barba and Season 7's David Hernandez did not face the same fate when racy photos of them were discovered. Frenchie returned to television last year on NBC's The Voice. Perhaps Idol needs a better system for background checks.
