The Amazing Race 20

by Gina Scarpa

Tonight, on The Amazing Race, teams head to Asuncion, Paraguay and first, must find an equipment supply shop. Of course, all the teams catch up to one another at the airport. Dave and Rachel, and Art and JJ, figure out that they can get in earlier to Paraguay if they go on standby for an earlier flight but Nary and Jamie tip every other team off to the plan. A total of four teams (Dave and Rachel, Art and JJ, Nary and Jamie, and Mark and Bopper) make it onto that first flight while everyone else boards the second flight.

At the equipment supply shop, they search for their clues and encouter a Road Block - Stacked Up or Strung Out. In Stacked Up, teams have to head to the largest fruit market in Paraguay and stack watermelons in a perfect 10x10 pyramid. In Strung Out, teams head to an auditorium and attach 36 strings to a harp. Both of these sound ridiculously hard and are sure to cause some teams to become unhinged.

Art and JJ stack those watermelons like they've been doing it their whole lives and are the first to take off for Plaza de la Democracia. After Rachel and Dave's pile comes crashing to the ground, they take off for the harp challenge, with Mark and Bopper right behind them. Vanessa's comments about Rachel (of Brendon and Rachel) freak her out so much that they abandon the watermelons and head to string the harp as well. Oh man, the harp is SO not the better option.

At Plaza de la Democracia, it's time for a Road Block: Who's ready to use their head? It might sound like an intellectual challenge, but team members actually have to dance with a bottle on their heads. After a few broken bottles, Art completes the challenge. He and JJ blew their way through this leg and now head to the Escalinata de Antequera monument, the pit stop. Not only are they first at the mat, but they win a trip to the Bahamas as well. Those border patrol agents were downright impressive tonight!

Dave and Rachel freak out at the harp and decide to bail out and use their Express Pass. A little premature if you ask me. At least attempt the task! That pass only takes them to the Road Block, where Dave fails miserably and incurs a two hour penalty.

Meanwhile, Brendon and Rachel fly through the harp challenge and take off for the Road Block. Mark and Bopper finish next, and then Joey and Danny complete the watermelon task. As the other teams move on, Elliot and Andrew and Vanessa and Ralph find themselves fighting to stay in the race.

Brendon and Rachel arrive at the pit stop and finish in second place, Danny and Joey are in third, Mary and Bopper are fourth, Nary and Jamie are fifth, and Dave and Rachel finally check in sixth.  It's the first time in 20 seasons that a team has not completed a task and still stayed in the race.  Kerri and Stacey arrive next, followed by Vanessa and Ralph.  Elliot and Andrew arrive last in one of the toughest legs I've seen on the race in a long time.
