Top Chef: Texas

by Gina Scarpa

It's been a week since Ed was eliminated on Top Chef: Texas and I'm still not over it. This week, the final four are headed to Whistler, British Columbia are meet up with Padma on top of a mountain. Just when you think to yourself, "They're not going to have them cook up there!" she informs them that for their first challenge, they'll have to prepare a dish aboard a moving gondola. The altitude alone is tough enough, never mind the motion sickness and general nerves that come along with this challenge!

The dishes are served at Steeves, on top of Whistler Mountain, to the panel and guest judge and Olympic snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler. Lindsay worried that she didn't have enough salmon but pulled it out and got a win. Not only does she get the victory, but she gets $10,000 and automatically advances to the final round. The other three chefs will have to go through two more rounds in order to move on, while Lindsay gets to kick back in Whistler and relax.

In the second round, every item they'll need for their dish is frozen in blocks of ice. In order to get to them, they'll have to use a pick to chip away at the ice. For a moment there, I thought Beverly was going to stab Paul for the crab legs! You gotta give it to Paul, who stopped to help smash ice blocks to help his fellow competitors. Karma repays him, along with a tasty crab dish, and he moves on to the final round in Vancouver.

That brings it down to Sarah and Beverly to face off in a culinary biathlon. First, they ski, then they shoot at targets to select their ingredients. This is nuts! Olympic hockey player Cammi Granato is on hand to guest judge this final cookoff. Watching these two ski is pretty amusing, and they'll probably have bruises from their falls for days!

Sarah brags that she grew up in the woods and has shot a gun before yet it's Beverly who finishes skiing and shooting first (and has more accuracy). Bev's arctic char was earthy and flavorful but Tom points out that it might be a little overcooked. Sarah's braised rabbit dish worked nicely and was simple, which goes over well with the judges.

It's time for a decision and the person moving on to the final round is... Sarah! So it's sweet justice for the final three. They made it this far without ever being eliminated and now, they'll battle it out for the title of Top Chef. Who are you putting your money on?
