The artists were taking it to the streets on Work Of Art: The Next Great Artist and some of the artists were taking it all off at the same time.
We start with the artists heading down to Tribeca Park to meet China and Simon. They found out about the new challenge, which will be to create a piece to hustle and sell on the streets. The artists will be working in teams of two, with Sara J., after winning last week gets to pick her partner and she chooses Young. The other artists get to choose who they want to work with and it will be Sarah K. partnered with Lola and Dusty with Kymia.
They will have five hours to shop and create their piece and then will have two hours to sell their piece. Each team will have to create a physical piece of art...no performance art. Whatever they sell on the street they must turn into a piece to be shown in the gallery as well. The team that wins this challenge will win $30,000 and cannot be eliminated.
The artists sit down and try and decide on what they will be doing. Sara J. wants to do some pictures she is used to drawing and Young wants to do t-shirts. Kymia is going to make postcards to sell for $3 and they can be sent out to whomever the purchasers wants it to be sent to and Dusty will be doing t-shirts. Sarah K. wants to make paper headdresses and t-shirts, while Lola is going to take naked pictures of herself...alrighty then.
They go shopping and they can shop anywhere in NYC, but all meet up at American Apparel...seeming they all want to make t-shirts. Sara J. and Young get back first to the studio and they pile up all the supplies before anyone gets back. They are working almost an hour before Sarah K. and Lola make it to the studio.
Dusty and Kymia get back to the studio with less than two hours to make their stuff to sell. They are all freaking out about time and having to create stuff to sell and then make something to show in the gallery. And there is Lola butt and boobs...she takes her pictures and has the text to go over her naked body, but it doesn't cover much.
Kymia decides to change her idea from just selling the postcards to people, but selling her signature and in return getting signatures from them to display in her gallery piece. She runs this by everyone to make sure they are okay with it and if they don't consider it performance art. Everyone is okay with it except Lola, which starts a little drama, but she just tells Kymia to do it anyway because she doesn't want to sabotage anyone.
And it is time for the artists to head out to the tables and start selling their pieces. Lola has no set price on her pictures, but will gauge the people as they come up...she just sold one for $100, so good for her!
Young is selling underwear and wearing some booty shorts, so Kymia think he is selling out, but not sure how they are going to make that into a gallery piece. Dusty is feeling pressure to sell more t-shirts because Kymia is only selling her postcards for $5. Sara J. sells out of all her inventory early, so she decides to draw portraits of people for $10...this goes over well and has her busy the rest of the two hours.
Simon comes to the park and takes a look at what the artists have come up with. He questions Kymia's piece and if it is even art, which she defends they didn't have much time to think. He likes what Sara J. and Young have come up with. Simon loves Lola's pictures, but is not blown away by Sarah K.'s pieces.
Sarah K. is worried about her piece not working in the gallery, so she goes out and starts taking people off the streets to buy her stuff, so she can raise the most amount of money...the other artists think she is playing dirty.
The artists wrap it all up and back to the studio with an hour to finish their gallery piece. They are hurrying to get something done, but none feel confident with what they are putting together.
Now time for the gallery show and time to meet the judges again: China, Jerry, Bill and guest judge Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, art advisor/curator. Kymia's piece is getting positive reviews, but not so good reviews for Dusty. More mixed reviews for the rest of the artists before we get to the results.
We will get reviews from the judges on all the pieces. Young didn't get good reviews and made $129 in sales. Sara J. got positive reviews from the judges and had sales of $320, so a team total of $449.
Dusty is up next and he got negative reviews as well, but had sales of $185. Positive reviews for Kymia, but only had sales of $96 which brings the team total to $281, so they are out.
Sarah K. keeps the trend with negative reviews for one team member and positive for the other. Sarah K. had sales of $95. Lola got positive reviews and had sales of $217 and a team total of $312, which means Young and Sara J. win the $30,000 and are safe.
The judges meet and discuss the remaining artists and it looks like it is down to either Sarah K. or Dusty going home. They gather the artists back together and tell Kymia and Lola they are safe, leaving Sarah K. and Dusty in the bottom two. After some words for both artists, Dusty is told he is safe, so Sarah K. will be going home.
