Work Of Art: The Next Great Artist Season 2

by Todd Betzold

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! With it being this week's episode of Work Of Art: The Next Great Artist.

We are down to nine artists and we start out this week with Simon coming and waking up all the artists and has them meet him down in the lobby. They take a trip over to the New York Times building where they meet China Chow to tell them of their new challenge.

This week's challenge is to create a piece inspired by a headline they find in a big ol' pile of New York Times. They will have 10 minutes to find the headline they want to use and must also physically incorporate the newspaper into their piece. There will be no more immunity for the winners for the rest of the show, but for this challenge the winner gets $20,000 and the New York Times will display their piece in their headquarters!

The artists get a chance to go through the papers and then head out to the art store to get supplies before heading to the studio to get started.

Lola, of course, is struggling and not sure of what she is going to do. Dusty chose a piece about the economy and the struggles of Americans. Bayete chose a theater review of Sister Act 2: The Musical, which he is making the piece based on his love/hate relationship with religion.

Young chooses an article on an artist in China who is getting banned for his pieces. He goes to bleach the newspaper to remove the words and has ruined the paper. Lola is acting all crazy, but again, what is new there?

Michelle is doing an article on having to prove yourself with injuries for insurance companies. Having been in an accident a year ago, she is going to use her own injuries in her piece to show them fading away. Kymia will be doing a piece on a serial killer, interesting. Sara J. is working on a piece on the nuclear meltdown in Japan.

Simon comes in for his studio visit, which isn't usually good for the artists. Some positive words for Lola and Sarah K. on their pieces and they are both happy about it, but Lola is worried since she normally doesn't have approval at this stage in the game...she is normally comes up with her ideas right at the end.

Simon tells Sucklord he is transforming the headline into his piece, which is what the judges warned him not to do last show. Good reviews for Young, though.

After Simon's review, Sucklord wants to change his headline he has chosen. Everyone is okay with it, except Michelle who says it is not fair. Sucklord sticks with his original headline, but not sure how he can change it. Lola helps him out and they come up with a plan together, because she has a crush on Sucklord and doesn't want him to go home yet.

Bayete is struggling with his piece, moving away from his comfort zone of photography and figures he will have an hour to get it together in the morning.

The artists finish up frantically before heading to the gallery show. Many doubts in the room as they head there. In the gallery, we meet the judges: China, Jerry and Bill with guest judge Adam McEwen.

The judges go through and yet again, mixed reviews for all the artists and who knows whom they will want to keep. China announces the artists they want to stay: Sucklord, Young, Sarah K., Dusty, Lola and Bayete.

Young, Dusty and Lola are the judges' favorites this week and get a chance to explain their piece. After their explanations, China announces that the winner of the challenge is Young. That leaves Sucklord, Sarah K. and Bayete with the least favorite pieces and a chance to defend their piece. The judges discuss and send home Bayete.
