Work Of Art: The Next Great Artist Season 2

by Todd Betzold

The artists get put into motion on tonight's episode of Work Of Art: The Next Great Artist.

Simon de Pury starts the show off by waking up all the artists and telling them that today he is going to take them on a journey. They head down to meet China Chow and get to meet the members of New York Parkour, a discipline where participants overcome obstacles using only their bodies to move from point A to point B in the most creative and inventive way possible.

This will be the inspiration for their next challenge: to create a piece about motion. They will be working in two teams with each team coming up with a theme for motion and each member making a piece to be shown in their team's exhibition that all blends together.

The teams are just split in half from where they are standing. They will get to spend some time with Parkour for inspiration, and then get to walk the streets of NYC for things of motion to inspire ideas.

Team 1, which includes Sucklord, decides to go with the theme of digestion. Michelle, last week's winner, is gung-ho to do a piece on poop and it sticks with the whole group.

Team 2 decides to do their piece based on migration, but seem to all be on a different page with what they will create for the piece. They start walking the streets of NYC and pick up random junk to use for their pieces.

Meanwhile, Team 1 walks the streets and gets more confused about their theme. Sucklord doesn't understand how digestion has any comparison to motion, which I have to agree with him.

The artists come back to the studio and start working. Kathryn again works on something that will resemble the insides of a human...and she isn't even on the digestion team.

Simon comes in to visit the studio and Team 1 tells him of their digestion theme and he questions how it relates to the Parkour and their fast motion. Simon thinks Team 2's concept of migration is too complicated and too conceptual.

He then calls over both teams and pretty much tells them to start over. That they didn't get the concept of what they wanted them to do and the judges will be confused when presented with these themes.

The teams decide to scrap their themes: Team 1 goes with playground and Team 2 decides to go with a ball theme that loops together.

Kathryn is obsessed with her organ idea and doesn't want to change it and has a mini-breakdown. She decides to go with a video of shots of basically the same thing she did last week.

Lola is putting a bunch of shredded paper in a ball-shape, which just looks like garbage. Michelle is making a piece with a man that you pull the balls and he gets an erection...yup, poop and erections for Michelle...good thing she has immunity. They all seem to have sex on their minds with this challenge...we have a dirty group of artists here folks.

The night is winding down and many artists have lots to do because of the change of themes late in the day, but they all wrap it up for the night.

One hour before gallery show and everyone is working fast to get their piece done. They get their exhibits together and time to bring out the judges, including esteemed curator and owner of Salon94 gallery in New York City, Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, who returns to the panel as a guest judge.

The judges had some good and bad critiques as they went through Team 1's exhibit. They don't seem to have many positive critiques for Team 2's exhibit and it doesn't seem to blend together like Team 1.

The judges gather and announce the winner: Team 1. The two favorite pieces are Bayete and Michelle (again). They critique both, but the winner of this challenge is Bayete and wins immunity for next week.

From Team 2, the bottom three are Lola, Tewz and Kathryn. They all get very harsh critiques, especially Kathryn who is told her piece is similar to last week and then she has some fake crying breakdown. The judges discuss and come back to say that Kathryn will be going home.
