Sonos from The Sing-Off Season 3

by: Todd Betzold

It was another week of the groups performing two songs: a current radio hit and a hit song from the '60s on The Sing Off. Some of the groups hit some high notes and others didn't step up like the judges wanted them to. Sonos was one of those groups, as they were sent home on last night's show. Today we got an exclusive interview with Chris from Sonos to talk about their experiences on The Sing Off.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: How long have you been singing together?
A: Chris: That's a tricky question. As recording artists, we started in 2006 separately. All five of us have been singing together for three years though.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: What made you all decide to audition for The Sing Off?
A: Chris: We had been encouraged to audition before in past seasons. We have been on tour non-stop...done well with our own resources...try for a big push. Various members of The Sing Off encouraged us to try out as well. It is not the same style of a cappella we tend to do. Thought we'd be drowned out...we are not loud and high-energy...wouldn't be a good fit for us, but we thought maybe the time was right for us this year.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: How much of a transition did you all have to make without being able to use the pedals?
A: Chris: That was the biggest departure we had to make. We thought we'd have to do songs we wouldn't normally do, but that wasn't the case. We have a strange mix to our group. We have no bass in the group. The bass can be switched with the pedal...being without that left us in a hard predicament.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted:
What was the best part of being on The Sing Off?
A: Chris: It felt like an a cappella summer camp. It's a very unique person that stays involved with a cappella. There was a wide age range with the groups that absolutely love vocal music. We were rehearsing all day, every day. It was really concentrated fun. From a business standpoint, it was very helpful to us to be on national television.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: I happened to love your rendition of "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5. The judges weren't big fans however. How did you feel about their critiques?
A: Chris: Felt like double standard since they told us to reinvent the songs and make them our own. That song made us feel like we were proud of what we were doing. It was a classic and I do see the point, but I stand by our rendition.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: Did you feel maybe like you were critiqued harder by the judges since you sang in a group in college with judge Sara Bareilles?
A: Chris: I don't know. It seems they did hold us to a higher standard. Nothing they said felt sugarcoated. Sara always has been honest and not afraid to give feedback. We were never worried about getting special or harsh treatment. It actually never was on my radar.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: What's next for Sonos?
A: Chris: We are actually in Seattle right now on tour. Trying to book more gigs. We are working on new material and a new album with all original songs...it's about half way done. We are just looking for our next big push.

The Sing-Off airs Mondays at 8/7c on NBC.
