Top Chef Just Desserts Season 2

by Michael J. Lamp

Gail is joined in the Top Chef kitchen by Jordan Kahn of LA's Red Medicine. He's known for crazy combinations of savory and sweet. For their Quickfire Challenge, the chefs must create desserts with a root vegetable as the main ingredient.

Jordan's least favorites are Rebecca, whose potatoes were over fried, and Carlos for a confusing celery dish.

Sally was one of Jordan's favorites. He liked her use of turmeric and other Asian flavors. Matthew's carrot cake was the other top dish. Sally claims the victory, though. She wins immunity and $5,000.

As soon as the Quickfire ends, Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys pops up in the kitchen. The chefs are oohing and aahing, but also clearing wondering what the F their challenge will be. They soon find that their Elimination Challenge is to incorporate the Beastie Boys savory pantry (think pork and beans, whiskey and cornbread) into a dessert they will serve at a street art exhibit.

The challenge is a tough one for the cheftestants, and the judges don't give much inclination as to who their favorites are, which leads to a rather tense stew room.

Gail calls Katzie, Megan and Rebecca to Judges' Table first. Think they're the top three? Think again. Gail drops the ‘you're our least favorites' bombshell.

Rebecca's beer ice cream was overpowered by garlic. She asks for sympathy, but Gail isn't hearing it. Megan's pudding cake was crumbly, and using the onions as a side dish was viewed as an evasive maneuver. Katzie's fries and multiple condiments were confusing from a flavor perspective. Jonhnny wanted less on the plate.

Sally, Matthew and Chris are sent in next. They are the favorites of the challenge. Chris' brownie, Matthew's gravy cheesecake and Sally's prosciutto cake (yes, seriously) all succeeded at controlling the savory flavors and using them to accentuate the dessert without overpowing it. Ad-Rock declares Matthew the overall winner.

Rebecca gets the boot, rather unsurprisingly. She seems thrilled to have had the experience but even happier to have met Ad-Rock.
