Messiah's Men from The Sing-Off Season 3

by Todd Betzold

Another great season of The Sing Off is underway and we have seen some amazing performances so far. As with every singing competition, not everyone can move on. Last night we all had to say goodbye to Messiah's Men, but today we got an exclusive interview with David from Messiah's Men to talk about their experiences on The Sing Off.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: How long have you been singing together?
A: David: The group has been together since July 2003.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: What made you all decide to audition for The Sing Off?
A: David: The Sing Off is a great a capella contest show and it highlights a capella music and we saw that as a great opportunity to meet a broader audience. One member followed the show and provided us information to audition for the show and see what happens. We had an internal conversation and went ahead and auditioned.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: What was the best part of being on The Sing Off?
A: David: Most definitely was meeting the other contestants and the cast of individuals that worked with us. We had some excellent vocal coaches, excellent choreographers and wardrobe folks. Meeting people that have excelled in the music industry and working with them and getting feedback. Being in an environment of people that love music.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: What made you choose "People Get Ready" as your song for the night?
A: David: "People Get Ready"...the song portrays a very positive message. We are essentially a gospel group. Being on The Sing Off reaches a broader audience. The song has a positive message for a more hopeful tomorrow. We selected that song because it portrays the overall message Messiah's Men portrays every time we sing. To share our story, not with just the difficulty we survived, but more importantly the triumph and bring hope to our listeners.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: What is it like going from being a refugee in Liberia to singing for millions of people on television?
A: David: This is totally surreal. There is a part of everything that is happening now that doesn't seem like a reality. It is still sinking in for a lot of us in the group. Some of us in the group were still living as refugees 15 years ago. It is crazy just to say the least. Coming to the United States is a big deal...it was a huge accomplishment. Being on  The Sing Off is more than a dream come true. Being able to go out there and tell our story is an opportunity we will never forget as long as we live.

Q: Todd, RealityWanted: Where does Messiah's Men go from here?
A: David: Our overall goal is to be able to reach a broader audience here in North America and around the world...to introduce our style and story to millions of people. To continue to maximize the opportunity we have and reach out to folks out there. Want to continue to be relevant in the a capella music industry. Our unique Afrocentric music has a place in a capella. It is a story of hope. We will continue to work...hopefully get a better contract. Seize this opportunity.
