After last week's larger-than-life challenge of creating a look for models on stilts, the Project Runway contestants return down to earth for a challenge of smaller dimensions, but even more pressure. They'll be designing for Marie Claire fashion editor and Project Runway judge, Nina Garcia. That's enough to make anyone shiver in their boots.
When Nina walks in front of the remaining 13 contestants, almost every jaw in the room dropped. She explains her expectations: she wants classic with an edge, and tailored, streamline silhouettes. Nothing loud or patterned-lots of neutrals. It must be something she can wear to the office during the day and to a fashion event at night. Many of the designers have a contemporary, more vibrant style, so I'm interested to see what kind of spin they'll put on their designs.
One of the most stressful aspects of this challenge is that they don't only have to impress Nina as a judge, but they must impress her as a client as well. The winning look will be featured in a Marie Claire ad, which will be placed on top of New York City taxicabs. Ready, set, design!
Nina individually meets with each designer after the initial sketches have been drawn and gives her (extremely) honest opinion. She is nothing short of direct, which refreshes and reassures some designers, while making others break out in a sweat.
After a trip to Mood, Anthony Ryan and Becky realize they both chose the same distinct fingers and begin pointing fingers as to who chose what first and who will come out ahead (my money is on Anthony).
Several hours after the sewing machines start roaring, Nina enters the workroom to check up on the designers' status. When Tim enters the room, he generally doles out a good amount of constructive criticism while remaining tactful in his opinion of the designers' work. Nine, on the other, doles out a whole lot of NO and "So...what's Plan B?" Yikes.
Once Nina and Tim finish up their rounds in the workroom, they announce an added bonus to winning the challenge: the winning look will be featured in a Marie Claire editorial. Talk about a great incentive to Make It Work.
Before we know it, it's the day of the runway show and stomachs are in left in knots. Tim enters the workroom but is greeted by empty tables and scraps of fabrics. He finds all the designers frantically working on their sewing machines and voices his extreme alarm about their time management.
Cecilia finishes her work early and decides to lend a worried Julie two helping hands. Laura catches the generosity bug and helps Anya finish her garment as well. Several of the designers look on in distaste and see the extra help as a form of cheating.
They're not given much time to pout, however, because it's time for the show to begin. Tonight's guest judges are Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire, Joanna Coles, and actress Kerry Washington.
A lot of different styles come down the runway, several clearly impressing the judges and some making their eyes widen in pure horror. Heidi announces Danielle, Kimberly, Anya, Viktor, Julie and Cecilia are the six designers with the highest and lowest scores. Everyone else is safe to design another week.
Viktor: He confidently explains his simple and elegant silhouette with strong structuring. Nina likes his choice of creating separates while maintaining the appearance of a fashionable and modern black dress.
Julie: Nina is concerned with the wide open neckline and notes how far Julie strayed from her original sketch. None of the judges can place when the right time would be to wear a dress such as this.
Cecilia: She explains her error in choosing bad fabrics and colors from the get-go and knows without a doubt her scores landed her in the bottom. That's for sure.
Kimberly: Nine loves the tailoring of Kimberly's pants and is also a fan of the styling. Michael Kors approves of her decision to create separates, which allows the garment to easily transform from day to night.
Anya: Nina is amazed at the transformation from Anya's initial mustard colored, patterned fabric to a beautifully tailored jumpsuit anyone would love to wear.
Danielle: Danielle acknowledges her blunder of creating a blouse that was not sheer enough to show the detailing. The judges agree it is way too pedestrian and conservative looking-certainly nothing Nina would ever wear.
So whose look will Nina Garcia wear around the Marie Claire office on Monday morning? The judges choose the winner of this week's challenge to be Kimberly!
The contestant leaving us tonight surprisingly is Julia. With Cecilia's bad attitude, many of the designers thought she would be the one leaving us this week.
