The Bachelorette

by David McAlpine

Last night on The Bachelorette, it was our chance to see Ashley's final four suitors up close and personal as they each took her to their hometowns to meet their friends, their family and, the ultimate test--the parents.

Now, Ashley didn't react so well to Ryan pushing his parents on her last week, so I'm a little surprised to see her embracing this round of dates so much now.

First up is Constantine's hometown of Cumming, GA. Immediately, you get the sense that his family is very close and very Greek. I mean, with a name like Constantine, could you have expected anything different?

So in true Greek fashion, Ashley is greeted very warmly, and whisked around the neighborhood. In fact, she's feeling it so much that her and Constantine are showing off a little PDA--something I would put under the "risque" category if it's in front of the parentals.

Topic one with the family: moving. They make it very clear that Constantine loves Cumming and that she would probably have to move there. She says she's totally fine with that. At least, until she realizes just how big his family is when they all decide to rush her at the end of the date. It's cute, and Ashley says she feels very at home.

Ames is next, taking Ashley to Chadd's Ford, Pennsylvania. Honestly, this guy couldn't get any preppier, and I love it. This is straight up wine country, bed and breakfast town USA, and he happens to be right from the heart of it. His family is a little more down to Earth, but just as nice.

Ames' sister sits down with Ashley to get a gauge of her true feelings, and she seems to think that Ashley is really taken with Ames. It seems like she's tipping the scales in Ames' favor as Ashley continues to see what a wonderful (and catalog-perfect) family he has.

Even better: after family time, Ames takes Ashley on a picnic where he opens up about his troubled past as a student which resulted in him going away to boarding school. It's adorable that he wants to explain to her how he came to be who he is, and he's definitely number one on my list.

Ben is third, taking her to Sonoma, California. Also wine country, not as preppy, but a little more heavy on the grape. All in all, just as good as Chadd's Ford. However, as opposed to having a house like Ames, Ben has an entire winery. Excuse me while I take my jaw off the floor…this is like a Bachelorette's dream here.

His family is much smaller, just his mother and his sister, but the evening is intimate in a way that seems enjoyable to everyone. Ben's sister is skeptical because she doesn't want him getting hurt (even though she signed him up for the show), but his mom definitely thinks he's falling in love.

Last but not least is a trip to Long Island, New York with JP. True to style, JP takes her roller skating, then brings her home to mom, dad and brother.

The conversation around the dinner table is a little more serious here than on other dates, because JP has had such an experienced dating past. They talk about relationships that have come and gone, and Ashley lets JP know they share something special. In turn, JP cracks out the old photos and gives Ashley a giggle.

The rose ceremony this week isn't that long, either, as Ashley says she's already pretty much made up her mind. Considering I didn't see one bad date of the four, I couldn't see how she made up her mind, unless Constantine's overpacked family had driven her away.

However, it turns out to be Ames who didn't measure up, as he was the one left without a rose. He looks genuinely shocked, especially since Ashley can't explain it fully. He starts to cry in the limo (and my heart begins to break), but he hopes love is on the horizon.

The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
