Platinum Hit

Usually, at the start of each episode of Platinum Hit, the songwriters meet up with Jewel to find out what hook they'll be writing. This week, however, they get a note from her, asking them to meet her at a destination they'll be "sure to fall in love with". That place is The Arboretum of Los Angeles County, which is absolutely beautiful.

Standing next to Jewel to help judge this week's challenge is Ryan Tedder, of OneRepublic. He's a lot more than the brains behind the band, though. He's also written for the likes of Beyonce and Jordin Sparks. Of course, as you probably figured out, the challenge is to write a hook for a love song.

As everyone scrambles to go write, I can't help but wonder how Brian is comfortable in a leather jacket underneat the warm California sun. I mean, people are wearing tank tops!

Ryan declares the top three hook writers: Jes in third, Nick in second, and Sonyae as the winner. She had a pretty cool concept with "Love Me To Life". Jewel, in all her floral glory, awards Sonyae a "massive advantage", which is to not only pick her entire team, but choose the other two teams as well.

The teams are: Sonyae, Scotty, and Brian; Nick, Jackie, and Johnny; and Jes and Melissa. Sonyae was super strategic - taking Nick's two favorite people, splitting up Jes and Johnny, giving Jackie to Nick, and forcing Jes to only work with Melissa.

Things seem to be jiving very well with Sonyae's team, but Nick is having a hard time with Jackie's mouth constantly running. Jes, meanwhile, is feeling ill and crashes on the ground for a bit while Melissa does - well, nothing.

Jewel swings by to deliver some big news: somebody from the winning team will be singled out for their contribution and win immunity for the next challenge. Definitely huge.

Is it me or did Sonyae's song feel like it only had four words in it? Nick's concept was definitely original, using Jackie as the new woman after he experiences a tough breakup. Jes's song was sweet and had a lot of emotion behind it - but of course it did. The guy that it's about is sitting ten feet away!

However, Jes and Melissa end up finding themselves in the bottom. Kara thought Sonyae's title was the best she's heard but absolutely hated Nick's concept. "Love Me To Life" is chosen as the winning song, and Sonyae wins immunity.

The biggest issue with Jes's song is that her lyrics are not unique enough for the judges. Keith summed it up by calling it "a beautiful performance of an awful song". Ouch. Melissa admitted to not writing any lyrics, and it's probably worse to write nothing than something not up to par. To make matters worse, she throws a major attitude at Kara which basically seals her fate.

Melissa is eliminated from the show, which probably sits well with the other songwriters since nobody seemed to feel like they jived with her.
