If there's one thing I've learned from American Idol this season, it's that I can't predict anything! From Jovany getting snubbed, to Casey's shocking save, to Thia's unexpected exit, you never know what's going to happen on results night. I have a sinking feeling that tonight is no exception...
The Top 9 take the stage to perform a medley of rock songs including "I Love Rock N' Roll", "My Baby, She Wrote Me A Letter", and "Sweet Home Alabama". After that, it's the usual Ford commercial followed by a video of comedian Russell Brand's visit to the set. It seemed he was more there to lead an improv class than offer advice.
The first three to head to the center of the stage are Lauren, Casey, and Stefano. One of them is in the bottom and that person is... Stefano.
Former Idol turned Broadway star Constantine Maroulis returns to perform "Unchained Melody". Say what you want about this performance but he kicked some serious booty in Rock of Ages. YouTube it.
Next up is Paul, Scotty, and Pia. Scotty need not worry - the little girls love him. He heads back to the couch, and Paul follows soon after. Pia is in the bottom three for the first time this season. The audience can boo all they want but the question is: did they pick up the phone for her last night?
After a video showing the Idols' visit to TMZ, the last three singers find out their fate. James and Haley are safe, while James ends up in the bottom three. Maybe America wasn't feelin' his take on Michael Jackson. Actually, they probably weren't feeling his comment, "If
I get voted out, it's because America can't look at themselves in the mirror." It was a bit much.
A shirtless (and old) Iggy Pop takes the stage for a performance while the Idols dance on the couches for him. Is anyone else creeped out by this?
America forgives Jacob, sending him back to the couches of safety. When Ryan reveals that Pia is eliminated, she stares at the judges with a look that says, "Do you wish you used the save on me?" Jennifer can't figure out what happened but when you think about it, it's not that surprising. For one, Pia didn't come across as really being warm or fun... or humble. Humility will get you a long way, right Melinda Doolittle? On top of that, the judges never had anything bad to say about her so it didn't seem she was in need of any help in the viewers' eyes.
Bottom line: A singing voice isn't everything on Idol. Ask Jennifer Hudson.
Be sure to tune in when the Top 8 take the stage on American Idol, Wednesday at 8/7c on FOX.
