Live to Dance

By Kristal Bailey

Tonight on Live to Dance, the finalist dance for the judges to decide who Lives to Dance and wins the $500,000! I’m a little disappointed to see there is no wild card option, but I guess the experts exhausted that option in deciding the semi-finalists. Now, America’s last decision on who makes it to finals is revealed. Is it Kendall Glover, Shore Thing, Jill & Jacob, Roosevelt Anderson, or Tap Sounds Underground? America picked Kendall Glover! This girl has 9 nine lives, surviving near elimination twice now.

The finalist span all across dance styles and age groups, it’s definitely an eclectic group that you would not see in any other dance show.  The vote is all up to America, so it is really anyone’s show to win.

Twitch – They’ve been dancing for 10 years, and are now seniors in high school. This is the last time they’ll be dancing together with all their members, so this is a super emotional performance. That’s all the more reason for this routine to be the dance of their lives. Dancing to a classical interpretation of “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga, they had some great precison isolations and movements, along with a very impressive assisted flip and a few other tricks. Travis thought they set the bar for the night and have made it really difficult for the other groups. Kimberly commended their teachers for their superb technique and loved that they still showed diversity in their repertoire. Paula thought they did a fantastic job as well, and they leave the stage with 3 Gold Stars.

White Tree Fine Art – They’ve had quite a journey on the show so far, coming from not making it to the semi-finals, being America’s vote, and then getting the judges vote, they are so motivated to show their love for ballet and each other in their last chance dance. Dancing to their wedding song, a folksy pared down version of “Somehwere Over the Rainbow” they were absolutely beautiful to watch. They just made every moment seem effortless and filled with their love for each other. And then, they ended the song on a very impressive handstand that held both their weight horizontally. Kimberly has loved them throughout the competition and just loves that this was a “fairytale come to love” that was just magic. Paula said it was a “priviledge to have them on the Live to Dance stage” and thought they were lovely. Travis hasn’t been their biggest fan, but after that routine, he’s now a believer. They leave the stage with a very deserving 3 Gold Stars.

The Vibe – Of all the finalists, this the only group I legitimately I forgot about. Woops, it’s just been a long time since we last saw them perform. Dancing to “Umbrella” by Rihanna and Jay-Z, they were once again just a little too large for the cameras to follow. I’m sure they’re a fantastic group to watch live, but it is definitely not translating in all the camera angles and quick cuts. Paula thought they all had great technique across all the different styles of dance they incorporate. She does think they need to learn that “less is more”, which given the limited sight of a camera, I think they needed to learn this just for the show. Travis thought it felt busy and they should have made it a bit less ambitious so the audience and experts could just appreciate it in peaks and valleys. Kimberly was impressed that a group this large was able to stay clean throughout. They leave the stage with 2 Gold Stars and 1 Red Star from Travis.

Kendall Glover – As the last finalist to make it through, she had less time to prepare her routine. She’s the only soloist in the finals and has to wow America to stand out. We also finally learned that the reason she doesn’t straighten her knee is because she ahd tendonitis a few years ago, which I think is a pretty legit excuse. Dancing to “Dog Days Are Over”, she just lit up that stage. Kimberly thinks she is a “power house performer” who can muscle through every turn and every trick. She’ll be watching for her future dance career. Paula loves how commited she is to her routines and how dedicated she is to the craft. This was one of her favorite routines of the entire show. Travis calls her a “bright, shining star” and can’t wait to see where her career goes from here. She leaves the stage with an easy 3 Gold Stars.

Dance Town Chaos – They’re a diverse family of dancers from all over the world. Dancing to “Power” by Kanye West, they’re doing a more hip hop routine that “none of them are comfortable with.” After that quote, I was very worried what they were going to perform, but I actually really loved their routine. And the experts loved them as well, giving them a standing ovation! Paula shouted her praise, saying that they are “what it’s like to be authentic and relevant.” They just surpassed the bar, were inspiring and just overall excellent. Travis barely had words for them! He thought they were innovative and cleaver, but also loved that they kept changing it up to keep it interesting throughout. Kimberly exclaimed that she “IS IN LOVE.” She was totally feeling it and they gave them an enthusiastic 3 Gold Stars. And then to top off the love fest, I loved that the host said that they only thing that would make this better is if Kanye tweeted it about it.

D’Angelo & Amanda – These mini love birds and ballroom stars are absolutely adorable. They nearly got in a fight this week because D’Angelo said that he should get more of the prize money because he has to lift her. Even their fighting is adorable! And this week, they can use their fighting as inspiration, since they’ll be dancing the intense Tango. The experts gave them the second standing ovation of the night! This is going to be a close match to the final winner. Travis called them “the future of ballroom dance.” They did a great job of showing off all their skills and ability during that one routine. Kimberly loves that they perform with “winners’ mentality” and intensity. Paula flat out called them the best. They have improved so much, she loves working with them, and loves watching them. They had great technique and she found the absolutely mesmerizing. They leave with 3 Gold Stars.

At the end of night, only one Red Star was given out. The routines were all really strong and I’m sure the experts are glad that they won’t be the ones to decide the winner.

Tune in next week to see who America decides will win the show and the $500,000 grand prize.
