Project Runway Season 8

On Thursday, Project Runway had their finale show at Lincoln Center for the first time. In the preview years, it was held at Bryant Park. RealityWanted was there to give you an inside look to what the celebrities and other designers thought about the remaining contestants on the show.

Some of the celebrities spotted at this event were Betsey Johnson, Jordin Sparks, Jessica Simpson, Jay Manuel, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia, Heidi Klum, Nigel Barker, Tyson Beckford and more.

Many were excited to see what the designers would put out on the runway: “I haven’t been following the show as much as I wanted, but all the contestants are so talented and I love the different styles that I see. I don’t know who I’m rooting for, but good luck to all of them!” said singer Jordin Sparks.

Here’s my take on remaining 10 designers and their collections at Fashion Week:

Michael D.: His collection had a bit of a modern Victorian feel. It was a little trashy for my taste, had some construction issues and definitely was not on the same level as the other contestants.

Valerie: Because of her Latino background, she wanted to use bright colors. The collection had a great overall aesthetic with cool shapes and a nice mix of colors. The models walking down in funky sunglasses added to the overall look.

Christopher: He based his collection off of roots, grace and romance. Although the clothes didn’t pop out as much as the other designers, the entire collection was very wearable and classy. It was well-made and clean.

Casanova (now eliminated after last night - see Episode 7 recap): After introducing his line, Casanova promises “no more plush puppies.” Hallelujah! I was extremely impressed with his work and improvement in taste. Some of the outfits seemed a bit much, but some of the looks were very cool with a mix of sparkles, sequins and gold.

Ivy: She had one of my favorite collections. It was inspired by a beach in her hometown of Hawaii. The entire line was made of neutral colors and had a breezy aesthetic to it. It was well constructed and the dresses were great and extremely wearable.

Michael C.: Here’s another designer I was very surprised with. The collection looked very expensive with the ivory and eggplant colors and mix of satin, beading, fringe and feathers. It is very classy and upscale.

Gretchen: This collection seemed bohemian chic and is (as to be expected) very well-constructed. She used a lot of African animal prints and I could see myself wearing a lot of the looks.

Mondo: Upon first coming out to introduce his line, he got a great reaction from the crowd. It had a very Betsey Johnson-esque feel to it and I’m sure Betsey herself loved it! There were lots of crazy patterns and shine with great headpieces. It gave off a fun, cool night on the town feel. There were a good mix of form fitting and flowy pieces.

April: She described her collection as “dusty dolls going to a tea party and getting washed away.” I really liked the cuts and fabric used. It isn’t as well constructed as the others but it still had good color patterns and ideas.

Andy: He based his collection on “a dream about bringing statues to life.” There was definitely an alien-esque feel to the line and all the designs were well-fitted to the models. He used lots of grays and emeralds to give a sexy chic look.

After talking with this season’s designers who had already taken the boot, it was clear they were very happy to be at Fashion Week and were very impressed with their fellow designers work.

Jay Manuel talked with RealityWanted about his opinion of the show: “I’m really happy to be here because I haven’t watched this cycle of Project Runway and it’s featuring many different designers. I was really impressed with the designers and what they put out. Definitely one of the big trends we’ve seen is Aubrey for spring and there were some amazing feminine cuts,” he said.

Project Runway airs every Thursday at 9/8c on Lifetime.
