Project Runway Season 8

by Lindsay Strouse

After one week with zany fashion designer Betsy Johnson and the next with hat extraordinaire Philip Treacy, I have no idea what Project Runway is going to pull out of their bag of tricks next.

Aha-it's team week. I smell drama, drama and more drama. Heidi Klum splits the designers into two teams of 6. Because Michael C. won the last challenge, he is able to choose his first teammate: Gretchen.

Team #1 ends up consisting of Michael C., Gretchen, Christopher, Andy, A.J. and Ivy. Team #2 is made up of April, Mondo, Peach, Valerie, Michael D. and Casanova.

The teams must create a six-piece collection for a Fall 2010 line. They are given a list of upcoming trends and textiles from which they must choose.

Team #1 decides to choose the concept of "menswear for women" in the textile of camel. Team #2 decides to go with military and lace. It's very clear Team #1 is full of strong designers that are quickly going to clash. Who am I kidding? This isn't Team #1-this is Team Gretchen.

Peach is worried that no one is attempting to take on the leadership role in her group. Most of the designers in the group want to create their own look, but Peach points out it is supposed to be a group effort in creating an entire collection-not 6 separate looks.

Team Gretchen decides to officially choose their name to be Team Luxe to show off a luxurious style. I'm actually really surprised to see how well they're getting along. Except for Michael C., that is. Maybe it's a little bit of leftover bitterness from the last challenge, but several of the designers (especially Ivy) are butting heads with him.

Tim Gunn returns with Peter Butler, the consulting hairstylist for Garnier. Only two members from each team are allowed to meet with him for some advice. April and Valerie go from Team Military and Lace and Gretchen and Andy represent Team Luxe.

Tim checks in with the teams and heads over to the military and lace side first. He shares his worry that lace can often read as old. Tim Gunn once again has nothing good to say about Casanova's design-I'm starting to feel so bad for this guy!

Team Luxe is up next. They boast of their good chemistry and ability to work cohesively but Tim admits their line seems a bit "ho-hum" compared to the other team.

Casanova is not able to deal with the pressure of the judges' constant critiques and needs a break for a diva meltdown. He takes a nap to regain his mental strength while the rest of the team is left to pick up the pieces.

Before you know it, it's time for the model fittings. Casanova's model is ready for her outfit, but Casanova is still in meltdown-mode. She tells him to not let the opinions of others get to him and do what he feels is right. And poof! He's all better.

Team Luxe continues to be frustrated by Michael C. and A.J. They are worried their slow and messy work is going to hurt the end result. However, self-proclaimed Superwoman Gretchen is there to MAKE. IT. WORK.

The next morning, Team Luxe utilizes their models for more than their long legs-they decide to increase their team to 12 members and set the models to work on sewing. Talking about a tough job!

I'm personally rooting for Team Military and Lace because of their contemporary and funky style. I have a feeling Team Luxe is going to be cleaner, but it's a little blah for my taste.

Time to hit the runway. Tonight's guest judge is Georgina Chapman, English fashion designer and co-founder of fashion label Marchesa.

Up first is Team Military and Lace. I'm really digging some of these outfits, and the lace is hot! I could definitely see myself rocking out in these outfits!

Next up is Team Luxe. It definitely has a more mature and classic feel than the last collection. The color palate was more neutral and felt more like an actual line. However, I stand by my original opinion-there's nothing exciting whatsoever.

And the winner of the challenge is...Team Military and Lace! I love when the underdog wins. The judges compliment their ability to keep each look cohesive with each other while giving each design its own attitude and flare.

They then take time to compliment Casanova and Peach on their looks, which must have been nice for them to hear after their struggles during the challenge. Even nicer was when the other designers on the team agreed either Casanova or Peach deserved to win.

When it came time for Team Luxe to explain their collection, I could have made my own fashion line before Gretchen was done talking. After some tears, Gretchen chewing EVERYONE'S ear off and a whole lot of defensiveness from everyone, Casanova is named the winner and A.J. is sent home.

The best part of the episode was saved for the last 2 minutes when Tim Gunn finally put Gretchen in her place. He calls her out for the inappropriate way she manipulated her teammates on the runway and it is clear many of the designers would have preferred for her to go home. Thank goodness for Tim's "wooly balls" (see Episode 3 recap).
