Launch My Line Season 1

by Chandra Clewley

“Walk On The Wild Side”

Tonight’s episode of Launch My Line started with a new and shorter challenge. The next launch is the following day and the professionals are asked to create a one piece outfit that is NOT a dress. They are then asked to go outside, and pick one of 8 picnic baskets. Each basket contains a different thing such as carrots, crickets, grapes and mice. Dan and Dean then round up 8 different types of wildlife. The professionals are assigned their animal inspirations by the animals food that is in their basket.

Louanna-Monkey

Merle-Tortoise

Patrick-Python

Kathy-Zebra

Kevin-Llama

Vanessa-Chinchilla

Eric-Toucan

Marilyn-Tarantula

Louanna and Jim focus on a safari type jumpsuit and come out safe.

Eric and Galina decide to focus on the bright colors of the toucan and add peacock feathers and beads. Merle thinks that Galina (who she has said is running the show in this duo, previously) is too literal and is going too big. She thinks the outfit looks like a “big night in Vegas” Alas, Eric and Galina come out safe too.

Merle is very disappointed with her model’s proportions, she is broad in the hips and the orange pantsuit she has designed with Thai does not hang well on the models hips. After scrambling to add extra fabric, this duo is also safe. The model on the other hand, after watching tonight's show, might be off food for a month. The outfit was not flattering on her.

Marilyn and Coco of course nit pick at each other, but whatever they are doing is working because they turn out a beautiful pantsuit, even though Coco is a perfectionist and Marilyn is not pleased with how “down to the wire” they were with the outfit. Marilyn comes in 2nd. I am wondering when Marilyn and Coco are going to take it outside for a nice fist fight. I am taking Marilyn but it would depend on the point spread.

The winner of the night is Kathy Rose and her expert designer Emil. At first they were playing with using a tribal print fabric, then later a zebra pattern, but it was too busy. Kathy remembered that in their last challenge she was told not to take things too literally and so Emil suggests they do a black pantsuit with a zebra belt. The draping is very well done and the piece looks marketable.

The bottom three are Patrick, Vanessa and Kevin. Both Vanessa and Patrick have a more avant guard taste and Vanessa believes that she is misunderstood by the judges. She turns out a bubble jumper with fur lined shorts peaking out of the bottom. The shape is fun, youthful and current, and she is safe with a warning to find her focus.

Patrick and Roberto had an image of Eve in the Garden of Eden when he received the snake, and have chosen a dark green wrap around jumper. Patrick originally has a snake head but omits it after Dan and Dean warn him about being too literal. When the model arrives she is also too big, and has too wide of a waste. What's going on with these LA models? Too much relaxation and fun, unlike the icicle inspired anorexics of New York City's Project Runway? To offset the waste, the long lines of the pant suit are cut down into bloomer shorts. The piece just keeps getting smaller and smaller until it becomes almost a bathing suit. Patrick hates it and says it isn’t his vision. During the runway show he even says “The girls that was wearing my garment was probably going to 42nd street to make $10.” This, I had to laugh out loud at. It was quite funny. I am wondering if Roberto and Patrick might take it outside too.

Kevin and Akiko have a classic case of overdesign. He wants to throw all the fabrics together and Akiko talks him out of it, but they still over design the piece with too many details like ruching that are unflattering on the model.

Because the judges have not seen any consistency and are unimpressed with the bottom of his design, Kevin and Akiko are eliminated.
