American Idol Season 8: Finale

by Gina Scarpa

Tonight, we finally find out if Adam Lambert or Kris Allen will be named the winner of American Idol.  Though last night’s performances were pretty dead even, the song written for the final two contestants seemed to be catered more towards Adam’s voice than Kris’s.  That could have given him that last push to win this thing but only time will tell… two long hours to be exact.   The Top 13 hit the stage to perform Pink’s “So What” and the song was significantly less bad ass with them singing it.

The performances will roll on all night long and last year’s winner David Cook was next to hit the stage with his newest song.

Afterwards, he mentions the recent passing of his brother, who lost his battle to cancer, and says he’s pulling strength from everyone else.  His song will be put up on ITunes tonight and proceeds will go towards finding a cure for cancer.

Who hates the awards portion of the American Idol finale?  This girl.  I’ve never liked the bad auditions and I really hate mocking people in front of millions of people.  I’d fast forward through this part but then I wouldn’t be doing my job.  Nick Mitchell/Norman Gentle wastes five minutes of my life before I get to a REAL performance.  Lil Rounds shares the stage with Queen Latifah.  Now, why couldn’t Lil perform like this when she was part of the Top 13?

More Idol performance fill up the two hours.  Anoop Desai and Alexis Grace perform “I’m Yours” with Jason Mraz.  Seeing Mraz excites me since I’ll be seeing him live soon enough when he hits my home state for a tour.  Kris Allen performs “I Wanna Kiss A Girl” with Keith Urban.  I love everything about it!  The girls of the Top 13 perform “Glamorous” and don’t exactly pull off The Pussycat Dolls look.  Fergie is welcomed to the stage afterwards to perform “Big Girls Don’t Cry”.  She is then joined by the other members of Black Eyed Peas for “Boom Boom Pow”.  I’m not sure if she cursed or what but the live feed was cut for about five seconds in the middle of the performance.  Shame on you, Black Eyed Peas.

Another memorable contestant from the auditions round is brought to the stage - Bikini Girl.  The only cool thing about that is that she sang a duet with Kara and who the hell knew?  Kara can SING!  After that, Allison Iraheta performed “Time After Time” with Cyndi Lauper.  They suit each other well and the arrangement Cyndi came up with was very cool.  Danny Gokey furthers his cheese factor by performing “Hello” and then Lionel Richie comes out for a performance of his own.  Please Danny, I beg you to be more current than you have been in this competition.  You’re too good.  Adam performs with Kiss and they win the award for best entrance EVER.

Santana, whose about to kick off a two year stint in Vegas, hits the stage with Matt Giraud.  Right after, the boys of the Top 13 perform “Smooth”.  David Cook presents Kris and Adam with their 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrids.  Those cars look nice!  Perhaps the strangest group performance tonight is that of Megan Joy Corkrey, Michael Sarver, and Steve Martin.  Yeah, you read that right.  Steve Martin writes music.  Okay, I have an Golden Idol Award for this: Worst Performance Of The Night.  Congrats.

The boys of the Top 13 perform "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" (and the answer for many of them is a resounding no) followed by silly Rod Stewart singing another one of his hits, "Maggie May".  Rod Stewart is 64.  Just throwing that out there.  The last Golden Idol of the night is given out (thank God) and I didn't even need Seacrest to announce the winner before I knew that it was going to the mentally insane Tatiana del Toro.

After a cheesetastic performance of "We Are The Champions" ... even though it was still cool that Queen backed them up ... it was FINALLY time to announce the winner.  Wow, there was almost 100 million votes for this finale.  Here we go.

The winner of American Idol is... KRIS ALLEN!!! WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
