The Biggest Loser: Couples - Episode 4 Recap

by Gina Scarpa

On this week's episode of The Biggest Loser, Bob's team is devastated when Jillian's team decides to go back on their word and vote out Damien instead of Joelle.  Filipe is understandably upset, because Jillian's team approached them after last week's weigh-in, asking who they should vote out.  Joelle saw the opportunity to redeem herself with her teammates and promised to work hard to bring her partner, Carla, back to the ranch.  This was the last week and the last weigh-in before the partners would rejoin the game so the stakes were very high.  Back at home, the players struggled with various obstacles from having to take time away from working out to take care of their families to facing temptations such as fast food restaurants and friends who want to go out to bars.

At the ranch, the players headed outside for their reward challenge.  First though, Alison Sweeney informed Blaine that he would be allowed to leave the game for 3 days so that he would not miss the birth of his baby.  He would return in time for the weigh-in and his numbers on the scale would count.  After Blaine headed out, celeb chef Curtis Stone joined Alison to explain this week's challenge.  With the Superbowl right around the corner, players would have to be able to identify how many calories were in their favorite snack foods from buffalo wings to 7-layer dip.  The top three players: Dan, Kristen, and Helen moved on to the final round.  Curtis showed them a healthier way to snack and they made a rosemary chicken skewer drizzled in honey mustard sauce.  Dan guessed the correct amount of calories and won.  His partner, David, would receive a 2 pound pass when he returned and Curtis headed home to visit David and show him some healthy eating and cooking tips.

In the second challenge, player donned NFL jerseys bearing the number 13.  It was significant because they were visited by Superbowl MVP Kurt Warner, of the Arizona Cardinals.  Kurt and Alison explained the rules: players would run out to the 40 yard line and head back to the endzone.  They'd then have to run out even farther, retrieve a football, and place it in an opposing player's bin.  Once a player had 5 footballs, they were out.  The winner would receive immunity which meant that their partner was guaranteed to come back to the ranch.  Filipe was taken out first followed by Tara, Dane, Kristin, and Mandi.  Dan and Mike went out next and soon, only Joelle and Helen remained.  It was a tight race to the end but Helen pulled off the win and her daughter, Shannon, would soon be reunited with her at the ranch.

After an intense last chance workout, one that carried huge stakes that would play out at the weigh-in, the players headed to the scale.  Before the weighed in, Alison surprised them with their partners.  If the players in the game made it through tonight's weigh-in and elimination ceremony, their partners would be weighed in the following day.  Here are their numbers:

Helen: 6 pounds (immunity)
Mike and Ron: 9 + 7 = 16 pounds (2.21%)
Blaine and Dan: 11 + 15 = 26 pounds (3.81%)
Filipe: 13 pounds (4.01%)
Tara: 12 pounds (4.55%)
Kristin: 12 pounds (3.70%)
Mandi: 10 pounds (4.22%)
Dan: 12 pounds (2.96%)
Joelle: 10 pounds (3.47%)

Mike and Ron, the brown team, fell below the yellow line along with Dan.  Both Mike and Ron felt like they had let each other down and dealt with serious feelings of guilt.  They made their case to stay to the other players, as did Dan and David.  At the ceremony, the players decided to send the orange team home.  Since leaving the show, David has lost 46 pounds.  Dan has lost over 100 pounds and found out he does not need to take his diabetes medication anymore.
