We’re looking to speak with
Italian-Americans who are currently participating in popular reality TV shows to
get their thoughts/feelings on the controversy surrounding programs that depict
life in New
Jersey. Critics say that some behaviors on reality
shows play up stereotypes (for ex.- the “guido” or “guidette”) that Americans
just overlook. Other people feel there is nothing wrong with being fascinated
with the lives of hard-working, family-loving, passionate people who happen to
live in New
Jersey. Have we-- as viewers, parents, average
citizens—gone too far and are too desensitized to alleged stereotypes? OR- are
we overly sensitive to perceived biases? We would love to openly and honestly
discuss this issue with Italian-Americans representing different
viewpoints.
