The Voice Playoffs: Leave It All on the Stage

We had a stage full of all-stars tonight in The Voice playoff rounds. With no steals left from any of the judges, decisions were beyond difficult. Shakira's team went first. Country singer Kristen sang "Two Black Cadillacs." It was like a gun was fired and the horse you bet on jolted into the front of the race. Kristen's sound was mild yet beautiful, subtle and distinct. She seems to have a sort of 90s nostalgic voice that is missing from today's mainstream music. I hope she continues to thrive in the competition.

Young Deja Hall took a more bold approach tonight. Instead of singing her usual ballets, she chose Jordin Sparks' "Battlefield". This young lady always delivers a solid performance, but I agree with the coaches when they say she is still finding her voice.

Tess Boyer followed Deja Hall, the underestimated cheerleader. This girl has proven she deserves to be in this competition time and time again. Her rendition of Christina Perri's "Human" was just one more amazing performance to add to her resume. Her powerful register is undeniable and left the coaches wanting more.

Then we have Patrick Thomson. Can I just say I love him? He has one of the most unique voices on the show. The song he chose happened to be one of my favorites, and it was a great song for his specific sound; he sang "Trouble" by Ray Lamontague. The ending note in his performance was striking. He really impressed everyone. Blake said, "That gargling with broken glass or whatever you do to grit up your voice is great!" I agree Blake.

Last performance from team Shakira was pop singer Dani Moz who chose "The Edge of Glory" by Lady Gaga. Man, did she take that song and make it her own! She sang in such a way that forced us all to submerge in the lyrics of the song. It was clear to see that Dani was leaving her heart on the stage tonight. It was a tough choice, but Shakira was able to pick three of the five finalists to move on in the competition: Tess, Kristen, and Dani. Though I would have liked to see more of Patrick, I think Shakira made the right choices.

It was finally time for team Adam to showcase their skills. We opened up with Delvin who sang an R&B song "Let's Stay Together." Delvin blew up the stage with his superb talent and control. He delivered the song so smoothly you would have thought you were watching a refined jazz concert instead of the finals of The Voice. That man is smooth like butter!

Jake Barker decided tonight was a good time to take a risk. He chose a song by his coach Adam Levine, "She Will Be Loved". I felt he fell short on a few notes but he still did extremely well, especially for someone who just sings in their spare time.

Kat Perkins also went out on a limb to perform a song by Journey, "Open Arms." By the end, all of the coaches were speechless; in a good way. As she held huge notes, Blake went on to say, "Forget with arms wide open, it's with lungs wide open!"

Morgan Wallen always seemed to be somewhat of a rock singer, but tonight he chose a country song called "Stay" to embrace his Tennessee roots. After his performance everyone agreed that country rock is a great genre for him.

Last on team Adam was internet sensation Christina Grimmie from New Jersey. She sang Jason Mraz's "I Won't Give Up," which she dedicated to her mother who fought breast cancer three times. Christina had us wondering how so much sound can come out of such a little person. She pushed that song to the limit and brought her coach Adam to his feet. Usher gave the compliment of a lifetime saying, "She's like a baby Celine Dion". When it came to decision time Adam did indeed keep his "baby Celine Dion", as well as R&B singer Delvin and the fiery rocker Kat.

Let's see what team Usher has to bring tomorrow night on The Voice!
