Aquile from The Voice Season 3

by Todd Betzold

Aquile had his jaw sewn shut and it couldn't hold him back from his passion: singing. Needless to say, when he took the stage on The Voice he was ready to shine. He was a huge hit with the coaches, as everyone but Blake Shelton turned around (Adam Levine called him a "Dumb, Dumb" for not turning around). He is a fighter and it will be fun to see him in the Battle Rounds. Today, he talked with RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about his coach, seeing his song on iTunes and much more.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What made you initially try out for The Voice?
A. Aquile: I've been a fan of the show since the first season and I like what the show represents. Secondly, I had a friend going to an open call audition and she wanted me to go with her.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: Why did you pick "Your Song" for your audition song?
A. Aquile: I knew if I sang an Elton John it would probably be a classic. It would be a hit with a lot of people. I thought it would fit my voice well and popular to everybody.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What was it like seeing the Blind Auditions on TV and being able to see the judges' reactions on the other side of those chairs?
A. Aquile: It was very cool to see their faces and their reactions because obviously it is all hidden to you while you're singing. It was another surreal moment watching it on TV, just like when I was performing. It was pretty surreal.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: When you were on stage, what was going through your mind when you were singing?
A. Aquile: I remember going through my mind was make sure you hit all the notes. Hit everything like it's supposed to be because it's really hard to concentrate up there with the whole excitement and staring at Christina Aguilera and the audience is crazy excited and loud. I was just trying to concentrate on my song, but it was really hard to concentrate on anything.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: Why did you pick Christina over Adam and Cee Lo?
A. Aquile: She was initially who I wanted to go with before I went into the auditions. I listened to both Cee Lo and Adam with an open mind, but I just went with my gut. Christina, I have been a fan of hers the longest and her voice is just amazing so I had to go with her.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What's it been like working with her so far?
A. Aquile: She is awesome. It is such an honor and an amazing experience to hear her words of advice and encouragement and to get to hear her sing a little bit and it's just awesome in person.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What's your strategy going into the Battle Rounds?
A. Aquile: My strategy is to stay focused. Just focus on my part and not my partner and not let my partner get into my head. A lot of it can be psychological, so I'm just trying to focus on beating my partner to the best of my abilities and not worry about my competition.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: We don't know much about you after just seeing your Blind Audition. What is something you want people to know about you? What music experience do you have going into the show?
A. Aquile: I'm from San Diego, CA. I grew up in Wyoming and that is where I kind of fell in love with music and developed myself as an artist. I'm a full-time musician. I play acoustic guitar. I write my own music as well as cover a bunch of music. I play in bars and clubs and restaurants and coffee shops and all that kind of good stuff. Prior to that I did a lot of church choir stuff. I was an all-state honoree for a lot of years. I have a band that I play with full-time as well. A seven-piece band called The Orbit Group and we play shows all year round and I'm all over the country and it keeps me occupied.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What's it feel like seeing your song on iTunes and seeing people buying it and getting all the love on Facebook and Twitter?
A. Aquile: It's a dream come true really. A lot of hard work is paying off is how it feels. It feels like it's about time.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: Anything to say to your fans?
A. Aquile: Just continue to watch out for me and thanks for all the love and support that I've gotten already. Stay on the lookout for lots more to come from me, not just on the show but after the show as well. I want to work really hard for the fans and so I'm going to be out on the road as much as I possibly can, so just be on the lookout.
