Project Runway Season 10

by Todd Betzold

I am more excited for tonight's episode of Project Runway than I should be, but when you have a challenge featuring The Rockettes and then the guest judge for the week is Debra Messing, how am I supposed to contain myself? They even get Tim Gunn in the kickline with The Rockettes, need I say more?

Of the seven designers left, Elena is the only designer to not win a challenge yet. Is tonight her time? The designers head out to Radio City Music Hall to meet Tim Gunn and The Rockettes! They put on a little show and then Heidi Klum joins them and does some kicks with them. For the challenge this week, they will be designing a new costume for The Rockettes that is versatile enough for them to wear year round and the winning designer will have their piece worn by The Rockettes during a future performance.

They have 30 minutes to sketch at Radio City Music Hall while they get to look at some past costumes The Rockettes have worn. Dmitry was a professional ballroom dancer, so this might be a good challenge for him. From an early standpoint, I am thinking this might be a difficult for Fabio and I see him going home tonight. Christopher is going to do the New York City skyline on his look, which could be cool or could be a big disaster!

None of the designers seem to be inspired while at Mood and they have fabrics they are not happy with. With a $250 budget, Elena rings up close to $400! She returns a bunch of stuff and she said she is stuck with things she doesn't like and she will have to make something different and new for her.

The designers have two days for the costume and they will be done at 7:30 the first night because then the Top 7 will be going out to dinner, which they are excited about. Melissa has an ambitious design and is freaking out already because she has a lot of work to do. Christopher decides to get some accessories from the Lord & Taylor wall and dress up while he works. He looks like Sonjia, which she laughs about because it is real life for her and he is playing dress up.

The designers are done for the day and head out to dinner and thanks to some wine, it is time to open up. Elena apologized to Dmitry for being a bitch at times during the competition and then Ven opens up about having older sisters and being alone growing up, so Elena understands him a lot better now. It was a touching moment for Ven, Dmitry and Elena.

Day 2 arrives for the challenge and everyone seems to be going crazy and not inspired to be working. Melissa has 18 fabrics to her garment, so she is a big pile of stress right now. Ven said Elena's costume looks like a cheerleading outfit.

Tim comes in for his critique and he tells Sonjia she seems very disabled. He said she makes me nervous because she has no ideas and she is running out of time. For Elena, he told her it looks like a band costume and they need to get a baton to go with the outfit. He asked Dmitry why he wasn't building up the trim with more fringe. Elena said Fabio's look is the worst and Fabio said the sequin is being a bitch to him and Tim Gunn said bitchslap that bitch (oh Tim)! Tim tells Christopher's dress is a possible crotch-shower. Melissa said her look looks different than everyone else in the room. Tim tells Ven to glitter it up, but he wants clean and cut.

Tim throws a wrench in the mix and he gives them all $100 and 15 minutes to shop at Mood. Fabio said he is satisfied with the fabrics he has and he wants to stay behind and Ven and Dmitry stay with him. They say they need the time, but the others want more for their looks. Melissa is freaking out in the store and Elena is buying sparkles. Melissa is finding nothing and everything she wants is too expensive, but then Christopher gives her $50 of his money. Sonjia is feeling no better this shopping trip then she did the first one.

The models come in for their fitting. Sonjia still doesn't have a top for her model to wear. Melissa is still stressed over time. The models leave and Sonjia skypes with her boyfriend and that helped her put things in perspective and what she is there for and what she is fighting for. She goes out and is now determined to get that shirt done. She will have to continue it the next day, as the night ends!

The morning arrives and it is Runway Day! Ven thinks that Melissa is a great designer, but is very slow. He offers some help to Melissa and does some stitching for her, which is nice of Ven (is he changing his ways)? Tim comes in with the models and they have two hours to get ready for the runway. Melissa's zipper flies off and she has everyone trying to help her and it is a nightmare. The models are getting in their costumes and Elena's looks like a band member, Ven has a plain dress and Melissa is sewing everything on as she puts it on, but she gets her in there.

The designers head to the runway and here comes Heidi. The judges this week are Heidi, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and guest judge Debra Messing! My favorites this week: Dmitry (looks great and looks like a dancer outfit), Melissa (it is different and I like the colors and design, even though she accidentally made a #1 in the front of it with the black sequin), Christopher (the skyline worked out for him) My least favorites this week: Ven (it is plain and nothing to it), Elena (it is a band outfit, not Rockettes), Sonjia (too many feathers and very short) and Fabio (it looks like she is wearing armor).

Runway is done and Fabio is safe. The rest of the designers have the highest and lowest scores this week. For Sonjia, Heidi said she is completely covered up and looks boxy. Nina said she is like a little purple bird and might not work functionally. Debra said the feathers wouldn't work for The Rockettes. For Dmitry, Heidi says she loves it and it is very edgy. Michael said exciting, polished and impeccably made and he didn't get lost in the challenge. Nina said she loved the choice of color and it moves. Debra said it is very glamorous, but it may walk the line with the little ones coming to the shows. For Ven, Heidi said the fabric is really nice, but it has no design to it and it is boring. Michael said it looks like an evening dress chopped off and he wants to see more of her body. Nina said she would have liked a little more drama. Debra said she likes the movement of the dress and she likes simplicity.

For Melissa, Heidi said it is a showstopper and it might be a little too short for them. Michael said it is dramatic and it is graphic, but it is like a cocktail dress chopped off and the "1" is driving him crazy. Nina said she looks like a cigarette girl. Debra said she was confused by this design and it looks like an awkward neckline for a dance number. For Christopher, Heidi said she loved it and loved the message and they would look stunning in it. Nina said the illusion is beautiful and it's New York at its best. Michael said he had a Bob Mackie moment. For Elena, Michael said she looks like a Las Vegas cheerleader and it is tacky and busy. Debra said it would be a beautiful costume for the circus. Nina said the biggest problem was her fabric. Heidi said it is really cheesy.

The designers head to the back room and the judges discuss the looks. I am thinking it will be Dmitry winning, even though Christopher has the New York theme going for him, and Ven will be going home. Melissa is safe. Christopher is the winner and he has been a big winner this season: winning this challenge and the other challenge with the 10-look Project Runway collection. Dmitry and Sonjia are safe, so it is down to Ven and Elena. The person going home tonight is Ven, so Elena is safe.
