The Voice Season 3 Blind Audition

by Todd Betzold

A new week on The Voice and that means even more Blind Auditions to see who the coaches take to finish their sixteen acts on their teams. Right now, we have Team Christina with seven, Team Adam and Team Blake with five and Team Cee Lo with four, so let's see who they all add tonight!

Week 2 kicks off with Melanie Martinez, who is 17 years old from Baldwin, NY. She has hair that is half like blonde and half black, which is unique, and she has a big gap in her tooth, which has made her shy throughout her life. She is also a photographer and shows off some pictures on her Sprint tablet, which is crazy she has a Sprint tablet and Sprint is a sponsor of the show! She is singing "Toxic" by Britney Spears, but she does it completely different and has a folksy sound to it and makes it her own. Blake and Adam turn right around and Cee Lo joins them later, but no Christina. She reminds me of Xenia from last season on Team Blake. Adam said he wants someone with a unique vision and she is amazing. Blake said he was hearing Melanie and he thinks she is a star. Cee Lo said it came to life when she hit the high notes and the unique look is a good fit for him. Melanie goes with Team Adam, which shocked me. I thought she was going Team Cee Lo.

Let's see, the next singer's name is Cupid, who is 32 from Lafayette, LA, and he made the song "Cupid's Shuffle" that we have all danced to. Why is he on The Voice? He said his talent was overlooked by the song and the one-hit wonder thing tears him up. He has done some singles since "Cupid Shuffle," but nothing that took off. He is singing "Cupid Shuffle" for his audition, which is kind of stupid. The song that defines him and he wants to get rid of being known just for that and he sings it and no judges turn around for him. Cee Lo turns around and asks him what he is doing there. Christina said he was very entertaining and wanted to turn around. Cee Lo tells him to sing something else and Blake said he really can sing.

The next singer is Brian Scartocci, who is 26 years old from Austin, TX. He married his high school sweetheart and they had two kids together, but in 2010 they divorced and he became a single father. He said if he is not here because of his voice, it is because of his heart and he wouldn't be here without his kids. He is alright, but he has a weird tone to his voice. It took some time, but Blake, Adam and Cee Lo all turn around for him. Adam said that is a tough one to do and you did it and you did it like you. Cee Lo said it was subtle and stylistic and he enjoyed it. Blake thinks they have a serious chemistry and he should consider him his coach with all they have in common. He decides to go with Team Adam, so another singer for Adam Levine tonight.

After a look at some duos that couldn't make it on the show, we get a look at a husband and wife team called Beat Frequency from Vancouver, WA and they do music full-time. I am not a fan of them, but they get Christina to turn around right away, but they continue with their song and no other judges turn around and they will be on Team Christina. Christina said she really enjoyed it and it is a tough song to sing live and happy to have them on her team. Cee Lo said the best duo they have seen so far and Adam said they are really good.

The next singer is Tyler Lillestol, who is 23 years old from Riverside, CA. He has dreams of being a baseball player and singer, but realized that the baseball dreams are not going to pan out, so he is pursuing a career in singing. He sings "You Got It Bad" by Usher and you wouldn't expect that from the tall, skinny white boy, but let's see how he does. He sounded good and a lot like Usher and Adam and Christina both came close to pushing the button, but no chairs turned around for Tyler. Christina said they are raising the bar and they may be more critical this season. Adam wanted him to break out of his shell more and the song didn't allow him to.

Next up is Liz Davis, who is 25 years old from Madison, MS. At the age of 19, she dropped out of college and moved to Nashville. She has been waiting tables and trying to break into the scene. She is a country girl at heart and hopes this is her chance. She is a very pretty girl and works that stage very well and very confident on stage. She is a good singer and Christina and Adam turn around right away, but Blake turns around at the very end, which ticks off Christina. Blake brings out his ACM Award for Male Vocalist of the Year, which should be enough to win her over. Christina said she was the first to push her button and she woke her up. Adam thinks she is wonderful and should be on his team. Liz goes Team Blake, of course.

The next singer is JR Aquino, who is 24 years old from Anchorage, AK. He is way out there in Alaska, so he started a Youtube page and started to get discovered. He has over 45 million views and is in the Top 100 musicians subscribed on Youtube. He is decent, but Christina and Adam enjoy him and they turn around right away. Cee Lo joins in right at the very end. Adam said he sounds a lot like Bruno Mars and they are a perfect fit together. Christina said what got her was his pitch. He picks Team Cee Lo.

We see Carson Daly head out to meet Agina Alvarez, who is 23 years old from Burbank, CA, as he delivers her invitation to the Blind Auditions. She was signed to Sony Records at 10 years old and at 18, she was signed to an independent label and made a Latin album. She was put on the back shelf by the record label and now she is trying to get back on the scene again. She sounds alright and has a deeper voice then I expected. I enjoy her, but the judges are sitting still and remain that way throughout the song. Blake said he is embarrassed for all four of them and she is really good. Christina said it was too powerful and she wanted something to wow her.

Up next is Nicholas David, who is 31 years old from Egan, MN. He said after college he was in a band and he was drinking and partying and doing drugs and he was in a low point and ballooned up to 300 pounds, He found his wife and they had a son together and that healed him and he shed the weight and he has a message of hope he wants to reach a larger audience. He definitely has the look of a big dork and has the benefits of The Voice and he gets Cee Lo to turn around, even though Blake seemed to be enjoying him. That means he will be Team Cee Lo.

The next singer is Alessandra Guercio, who is 17 years old from Brooklyn, NY. She goes to La Guardia High, which is known as the Fame school. She looks like a young Jersey Shore, so maybe MTV can bring it back with a younger cast? She didn't tell anyone from her school she is auditioning because she didn't want to jinx it. She gets Adam to turn around early, but I think she is kind of flat and no real range in her voice. She has some good moments, but I am not a fan. Cee Lo turns around at the very end, so it is a battle. Adam said there are some issues as it went along, but you have to be in this competition and it makes sense since you are 17. Cee Lo said it was a great vocal performance. Alessandra picks Team Adam.

Riding on the heels of Alessandra, the coaches found more young talent, as Adanna Duru (15 years old) joined Team Adam, Kelly Crapa (15 years old) joined Team Blake and Paulina (16 years old) joined Team Christina.

The last singer of the night is Avery Wilson, who is 16 years old from Hamden, CT. He grew up in a family of dancers and he always wanted to be a dancer. He sang in his room and his Dad overheard him and told him that he is a singer, so Avery is doing this audition for his Dad. He starts so strong and he has great vocals, especially for someone with no training and just starting in music. Christina, Adam and Cee Lo turn around quickly and at the same time, which makes Avery more comfortable and he starts bringing on some dance moves. Avery brings on a huge note and gets Blake to turn around as well...time for a fight. Adam said that was the most spirited reaction throughout the whole process, so congrats and he is beyond his years. Christina said you really can't teach that and she wants to develop who he is. Blake said he hit his button out of absolute respect for his vocal ability. Cee Lo said he is humbled and inspired and could become better being around him. Avery has his choices and he picks Team Cee Lo.

Let's tally up the coaches after another night of Blind Auditions: Team Adam with nine acts, Team Blake with seven acts, Team Cee Lo with seven acts and Team Christina with nine acts.
