Gunnar Deatherage from Project Runway Season 10

by Todd Betzold

It was the HP Intel Challenge last night on Project Runway and if you didn't know that, then you must have missed Tim Gunn say it like 20 million times. We get it Tim, HP is a sponsor of the show! Anyway, the designers had to create their own fabrics that were inspired by their cultural heritage. Despite the fact that the judges liked the message of Gunnar Deatherage's print, they were not fans of the print and his garment and he was sent home. Today he spoke to RealityWanted and other reporters in a conference call about his experiences on Project Runway.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: During the season, what was your favorite challenge?
A. Gunnar: I really enjoyed the Starving Artist Challenge. We had to make the t-shirts and sell them on the streets. It was exciting to see what was going on and the people were getting excited and engaged in what we were doing.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: So, your last name. Is it your real name or have you changed it?
A. Gunnar: My name is 100% real and the name I was given. It's definitely odd and different, but maybe my parents knew I was going to be different.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: Who would be your dream celebrity to design for?
A. Gunnar: Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine, hands down.

Q. What made you want to come back for Project Runway?
A. Gunnar: I think originally I wanted to return just to compete. I did get to go to the Top 20 in New York last time, but this time I wanted to go back just so I would have a chance to do the challenges. It's not often that you are granted the funding or the opportunity to create the clothes that we got to choose, so it was kind of a no-brainer for me to go back for it.

Q. What was going through you mind on last night's episode? You looked bored or over it?
A. Gunnar: I was very much over it. I think at that point the competition was just wearing me down and I just felt like I proved the point that I needed to prove and the only point I needed to prove was to myself. That was something I didn't realize until I was there. It was just where what was going to happen was going to happen and it was out of my hands at that point.

Q. Could you talk a little bit further about the print you made?
A. Gunnar: Honestly, I put a lot of myself into this print. I came from a very, very small town. I graduated with a little over 85 people. It was hell growing up and people were cruel. How many chances am I going to get to say something for the bullied on national television and if I have to tell my story to get it out there, then I will absolutely do so.

Q. I really loved seeing that moment between you and Christopher when you were leaving. Are you guys still in touch?
A. Gunnar: We're not in touch, but there is definitely no hard feelings towards it. There was during the show and taping it, but it's a competition and obviously the more chances there are, the more drama. If everyone gets along it's not as much fun, right?

Q. It seems that the judges have been bored by Ven lately. Do you think he should have gone home in your place?
A. Gunnar: I definitely think he was one of the worst designs, if that answers your question.

Q. What can we expect to see from you in the future?
A. Gunnar: I don't know. I kind of just want to be 22 for a while. I've always been working, even in high school I had two jobs. I kind of want to explore the world of creative directing and doing a little bit more with that.

Q. Do you feel you got what you wanted out of the show?
A. Gunnar: I feel I got exactly what I wanted out of the show. I feel like I got things from it that I didn't have before. A couple challenges in, I got to see what it was really about and it was about closure from the last time I was on the show. It showed I do know what I am doing with it.
