Project Runway Season 10

by Todd Betzold

This is the second time this season on Project Runway that I am more excited about seeing a comment from one of the judges than I am excited about seeing the designers' work. In a previous episode, Heidi Klum said "hoochie mama" and that just made me giggle and now Tim Gunn will say these words during his critique: "I see an homage to a menstrual cycle." That is enough to make me tune in!

We are halfway done and the designers are starting to feel stressed and tired and Dmitry and Elena are both over each other and the girls are wondering if Dmitry will do another dress, even though Heidi told him not to be safe anymore. The final eight head over to meet Heidi Klum on the runway. For the next challenge, they will each have their own inspiration. They meet Tim Gunn in the workroom, who is standing with Project Runway All Stars winner Mondo Guerra. This is the HP Intel Print Challenge and they will be creating a textile design and a modern runway look inspired by their cultural heritage. Mondo won this challenge in Season 8, in which he created pants that showed his HIV+ status and he said it changed everything for him. It was a very touching moment, but can any of these designers do the same?

Tim said the textile they design must be prominent in the look and the designs they make today will be sent out to be made. Tim just blurted out way to many names and sponsors for me to write down or even care about. We get it Tim, it is sponsored by HP and many others.

To deliver the cultural info to the designers, they get special visits from their Moms, boyfriends, sisters and loved ones. We get to see a softer side of the designers, including Ven who shed some tears after seeing his sister. Bring on the tears, as they all look at old pictures and reminisce about the past with their families, which will help them in this challenge design their looks.

The designers start working on their textiles and they all seem to be enjoying what they are doing, except Christopher who hates working with fabrics. Gunnar is going with a bullying theme because that is his heritage and where he came from and dealt with as a child. The loved ones are sent home and Tim takes the designers to Mood to do some shopping.

Gunnar is going to make an equestrian-esque look, while Christopher is going with a ladybug look because that is what was around his grandmother when she died. Dmitry will be making separates today, since he has made enough dresses so far and he must step it up. Christopher is saying he needs his fabric in order to work on something and is just wasting time right now. For Sonjia's pants, she said she must get the perfect fit or they will tear her apart on the runway.

Tim comes in and surprises again and said that their loved ones are at the apartments and made them dinner and they can go enjoy a special night with them. While all the designers enjoyed the time with their loved ones, they feel it has distracted them and will come in the next day not as focused and thinking of their loved ones.

The next day arrives and the fabric has arrived for all the designers and they are excited to see it. Christopher says that all the fabrics are crazy, but then Fabio said that his looks like penises and vaginas having sex, so like the beginning of time lol. Christopher is not feeling this challenge and seems out of it, but you don't have immunity this time!

Dmitry thinks that Ven has the weakest fabric and needs to do something with it. Gunnar drew his fabric to represent the bullying and Christopher said he loves it and feels the wall is coming down between them because they have a similar story, which is odd to see and hear. Melissa is struggling because she doesn't normally do this, but she wants to impress her family. Gunnar is now feeling lost because of his fabric and it is hard to match up because of the design.

Tim comes in for his critique and Christopher has two looks because he is unsure and Tim said the one look is expected, so Christopher is going to go with the other look and feels so much better. For Sonjia, he said the pants need to fit perfect or it will not work. He told Dmitry he needs to use the top to sex it up. And here we go, Tim tells Ven's dress looks like a homage to a menstrual cycle and it looks like cloth soaked up blood and it looks like maxi pads! He went deep for that one and it breaks down Ven and Tim hopes it doesn't offend anyone.

For Melissa, Tim said the fabric is beautifully and she needs to be more ambitious to wow the judges. Elena tells him she knows it looks like scrubs and he was glad she said that. For Gunnar, he said it looks like a don't bully me suit of armor and he must unstuck himself and now Gunnar must redo the entire jacket.

Ven is now changing is look after what Tim said to him. The models come in and the designers are liking what they are seeing. Ven goes back to the fan affect and Sonjia is over it. The night ends and Gunnar is feeling defeated by the jacket and said he needs a miracle at this point.

The runway day arrives and they have two hours to get their models ready. Melissa and Gunnar said they are the most nervous about this one today. Christopher said there is nothing special about his dress but the pattern and you can't see it and he will be fed to the wolves on this one. The loved ones come in and they will be heading to the runway show with them. They all love what the designers have done, but of course they do.

Time for the runway show and Heidi Klum greets us on the runway. The judges for tonight at Heidi, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and the guest judges tonight are Mondo Guerra and Season 9 winner Anya Ayoung-Chee and winner of the HP Challenge for Season 9. The designs I liked: Sonjia (it looks clean and different than what she normally does), Elena (it looks very cool and I am liking the patterns and it works), Melissa (the fabric is way out there and I like the dress) and Gunnar (love the jacket and the look is very good). The designs I did not like: Christopher (it looks plain and nothing special to it), Ven (same fan affect skirt with some pink flowers on a sash) and Fabio (just looks blah and like his other looks).

Heidi asks Elena and Fabio to step forward and their scores have qualified them to move on to the next round. The remaining designers have the highest and lowest scores. For Melissa, Michael said it fits perfectly and it is well-executed. Heidi said it looks like wings and wishes she injected herself into it more. Nina said it is a dress that would appeal to many girls. Mondo said it is a smart design, but the styling is more predictable. Anya said she could have pushed it a little bit further. For Ven, Heidi said she looks like a Hawaiian airline stewardess and it is one of the worst one she has seen. Michael is sick of the same look. Nina said she would like to see how she incorporates that print into his look and this looks like he can't work with print. Mondo said there is a lot of information in one dress and it visually confuses him.

Next up is Dmitry and Michael said they did what they were looking for and it is really well done. Mondo said the jacket is great, but it is a print challenge and the print is covered. Heidi said it is a nice print and the entire look is great and she would buy it and it is crazy good. Anya said it is super smart and powerful. Nina said the jacket is phenomenal because of the print and he needs to work on his styling and less is more. For Gunnar, Heidi said it is not cool and not modern and quite bizarre. Michael said it is a sheet of birds, but the thought behind it is great. Anya said it doesn't read in the garment and it is sort of non-fashion. Mondo said the print is very chaotic and it is boxy. For Sonjia, Heidi said it is hard to make a big print on pants and make it work and she did. Nina said it is great and it is young and cool. Mondo said this is one of the most successful garments up there. Michael said if the pants weren't done right, it would have looked like Pac-Man was eating her crotch, but thankfully it was done perfect.

Christopher is next and Heidi said it is ok, but a simple dress and you are not going to win with a fine dress. Anya said the print is beautiful, but like a prom dress. Nina said this is the most disappointing execution we have seen from him. That is it and the judges discuss the top and bottom three. They call Tim in to discuss Ven's look and how he could not tell him in his critique about doing the same look and he mentions the menstrual cycle again...gotta love Tim Gunn! The judges have made a decision and I think it will be Sonjia winning (again) and Gunnar heading home (I think Ven's look was worse, but Gunnar has been in the bottom before and Ven has been strong in previous challenges and they will give him one more chance to not fan a skirt).

The designers come back to the runway and time to find out the results tonight. Dmitry is the winner of this challenge because they loved the jacket so much. Melissa, Sonjia and Christopher are safe. That leaves us with Ven and Gunnar. Heidi said that Ven's print was a throwaway and he did the same look. Gunnar's looks did not impress them. The person going home tonight is...Gunnar. Heidi tells Ven if they see the flower thing one more time, but he is safe!
