The Voice Season 3

by Todd Betzold

Now don't get me wrong, I love The Voice and I think the singers are amazing and NBC has done a great job with a great show, but is this overkill? It started in the summer of 2011 to much success, so NBC ordered a second season in the winter of 2012. Another successful season and now we are doing Season 3 in Fall of 2012! When people see too much of a show they get sick of it...keep us wanting more NBC!

But alas, The Voice Season 3 kicks off tonight and I am excited. The Blind Auditions are one of the best parts of the show (besides the Battle Rounds), so let's get things started tonight with a performance by your coaches: Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green. They sing "Start Me Up" by The Rolling Stones and Cee Lo looks like he is wearing his own version of a wedding dress and Christina forgot her pants once again! It's fun, but not overdone at all.

This season the coaches will have 16 acts on their team and during the Battle Rounds, they can choose the act that lost in that battle and add them to their own team! Up first for the Blind Auditions is Terry McDermott from Aberdeen, Scotland. He looks like a Beatle! He gets a special message from his family in Scotland before he hits the stage, so of course he is going to make it. He sings "Baba O'Reilly" and I love it. He gets the crowd on their feet and he has a strong stage presence. It took them until the very end, but Cee Lo, Adam and Blake all turn around. Adam said he has a true rock and roll voice and Cee Lo said he sounds like the real thing. Blake said him and I can win this if he just got up there and talked. After the fought for him, Terry goes with Blake. And we see that damn cockatoo that Cee Lo will be having with him all season. Do you miss that damn cat?

The next singer is De'Borah, who is from Chicago Heights, IL. This is the one where NBC is promoting that The Voice is all about the voice and not the looks, because I thought De'Borah was a guy when I first saw her. Her parents are pastors and once she turned 18 she changed her look to the way she wanted to look and not how the church wanted her to, even though her parents support her. She comes out as gay (imagine that) and I enjoy her. Her voice is so unique and soulful and I love her. She is so strong on stage and has no qualms...get it De'Borah! Cee Lo and Christina turn around for her. Cee Lo said he loves her swag and her attitude. Christina said she had so much fun listening to her. A shock to me, she goes with Christina. I love this girl already, anyone else?

Up next is Gracia Harrison, who is from Virden, IL. She works retail and at a fitness center, but wants to work in music and is an inspiring country singer and she is a yodeler. She thinks the yodeling will make the judges turn around, but I think she is wrong. She sings "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart" and starts out singing normal and gets Blake and Adam to turn around before she yodels and then Cee Lo turns around. She has a great voice, so props to her. Adam said she is the best country singer they have heard on this show ever and it makes no sense for her to be on his team, so that is why she should choose him. Cee Lo agrees it is the best country performance on the show. Blake said she knows what the right decision is to make. Of course, and smartly, she chooses Blake. That means two for Team Blake and one for Team Christina.

The next artist is Garrett Gardner, 16 from Ringwood, NJ. His Dad was a jazz musician who passed away from cancer a couple years ago and that is when Garrett realized this is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He said this one is for his Dad, bring on the sympathy votes. He sang "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" by CCR and has such a deep and pure voice and I enjoyed it, but none of the coaches turned around for him. Blake said he heard of a lack of control, but he is a baby and it will happen for him. Christina said he is 80% there and it is an amazing gift that he has got. Adam told him he is so much better than he was when he was 16 and don't stop, a very touching moment.

Up next is Devyn Deloera, 20 from Snyder, TX. She said music saved her and made her happy again. She comes out with a shirt that is open in many places and showing off a lot of skin. She sings "Ain't No Other Man" by none other than Christina Aguilera. I think she has a voice in there, but it is too much to take on Christina on this show. You will be compared and you came up short to me. Christina must have thought it was good, because she turned around for her and then Blake and Adam joined her. Christina said that is a hard song to sing live and hats off to her. Adam said it would be wonderful to work with her. Blake said she is a very powerful singer. Then the gloves come off and the coaches put it all on the table to get her to choose them and she ends up picking Christina. That is two for Team Christina and Team Blake and none for the others.

Our next singer is Bryan Keith, 22 from Bronx, NY. His father is the lead singer of Spanish Harlem Orchestra, who have won two Grammys. He said he doesn't want to use his Dad's connections and he wants to do this on his own. His Dad told him not to be like him, but be better than him. He sings "It Will Rain" and starts out amazingly well. Blake turns around right away and Christina joins him shortly after. He has a great voice and he gets Cee Lo and Adam to turn around as well, so our first four coach turnaround! Cee Lo said he has the rasp and he has it. Christina said he has such a raw quality and a raw gift. Adam said he is dying to have him on his team. Bryan decides to join Team Adam and he gets his first singer.

We have a blast from the past, as Daniel Rosa, 21 from Riverside, CA, makes his way back to The Voice Blind Auditions. He tried out last year, but had none of the judges turn around for him and here he goes again. He said he has gained the confidence to do it this year. Will he get some chairs to turn around this time around? He sings "Someone That I Used To Know" and he sounds good. He has some weird moments, but some good moments as well. Blake and Cee Lo turn around and are shocked to see him and recognize him! Adam runs up and gives him a hug. Daniel starts crying and has to sit on the stage because he is overwhelmed. Adam said one of his biggest regrets last season was not giving him a big hug, so he had to do it. Cee Lo said that is the type of recent rendition that this show salivates for. Blake said it is hard to get here once, but even harder to get back twice. Daniel chooses Cee Lo and he has his first singer!

Next up is Anita Antoinette, 22 from Boston, MA but originally from Jamaica, so of course she will be singing "No Woman, No Cry." She is dedicating this performance to her mother who worked hard to get them to America. I thought she did great and she was fun to watch, but the coaches didn't agree and none of them turned around. Adam said she is a great singer and has a great voice, but he didn't feel it in his bones. She asked to sing it a cappella and the judges allowed her to and they gave her a standing ovation. Blake told her to please come back and Christina said it gave her crazy chills and they all asked her to promise to come back next season.

The next singer is Joe Kirkland, 24 from Fort Worth, TX. He sang with a band in college and they sold hundreds of thousands of CDs and then their front man bailed on them and he tried to take over, but the record label cut them off. He is here now to prove he can do it. He sings "Give You Hell." Adam and Blake turn right around. He has a great voice and he works the stage very well, but he is used to it being in a band. Adam said he has an aggressive tone, but control over it and he can't wait to have him on his team. Blake said he also wears vests and can see them doing cute duets later on in the show. Joe chooses Team Adam, so now we have two on Team Adam, Team Blake and Team Christina and one for Team Cee Lo.

So, we are getting down to the end and Cee Lo is one behind, so I think we have one singer not make it and one singer go Team Cee Lo, right? Next up is Jessica Sharpe, 23 from Greensboro, NC. She has never been out of Greensboro and feels lost in L.A. She hooked up with a cover band a couple years ago and is finally chasing her dream. She sings "Son Of A Preacher Man" and sounds awesome. She has that country in her and does well, even though she does look a little nervous up there. Here is the not making it, as none of the coaches didn't turn around. Christina said it wasn't bad, but she wanted that magical moment to happen and it didn't happen for her. Blake said promise him she comes back for Season 4 and they will make magic together.

After a quick look at some singers that didn't make it through, we get to see our last singer of night one of the Blind Auditions, who most likely is going Team Cee Lo. His name is Trevin Hunte, 18 from Queens, NY. He never thought he would be here, but music is that thing he could always run to. His middle school teacher told him he would never make it and he is wasting his time on singing, so suck on this one teacher! He sings "Listen" and starts out so good and gets Christina to turn around right away. He literally gave me chills. He got Blake and Cee Lo to turn around also. This was so good and can hold a major note and Blake yells at Adam to push his button! Cee Lo said it was so awesome and he might be that dude that can win this thing. Christina is completely blown away. Blake said he hit his button out of sheer respect for someone that has that much talent. Trevin picks Team Cee Lo (of course) and each coach got two artists tonight.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
