The Glee Project Season 2

by Gina Scarpa

This week's theme on The Glee Project is Theatricality and nobody could be happier about that than Lily and Ali. This should definitely be their week to shine! The homework assignment is "I Hope I Get It" from A Chorus Line and it seems that some aren't familiar with it. Lily takes over choreographing the number, shouting excitedly the whole time. I'm glad I'm not the only one that was annoyed by it because it was driving Aylin crazy as well. Then again, she's just on edge because she's still getting over Charlie's elimination.

This week's guest judge is Grant Gustin (Glee's Sebastian Smythe) which is fitting since he was doing the national tour of West Side Story when Robert cast him on the show. Some people, like Michael and Nellie, continue to get the same feedback over and over again. For them, it's to work on their confidence. Ali and Lily, on the other hand, stand out in the performance but it's Ali who wins it. Can you feel Lily's blood boiling through the television set?

The video shoot this week is set to "When I Grow Up" by The Pussycat Dolls and has a great concept. The contestants will be portraying grocery store clerks who dream of being famous music icons. Michael is Elvis, Aylin is Madonna, Abrham is David Bowie, Blake is Boy George, Lily is Cyndi Lauper, Ali is Katy Perry, Shanna is Lady Gaga (meat dress and all), and Nellie is Britney Spears. Oh Glee Project, why do you torture poor Nellie so?

In the studio, Michael was WAY off when singing his part. Nikki had told him not to prepare so much before coming in to record, but it seems he didn't know it at all. Abraham got flustered when Nikki asked if he considered himself androgynous when he performed, given that he'd be portraying David Bowie. To him, it was a negative word and honestly, it seemed out of left field that a vocal coach would ask it and then have a problem that it wasn't answered. The choreography with Zach was not that complicated, just a lot of posing and memorization required in order to pull it off. Lily couldn't figure out how Cyndi Lauper moved but Zach just told her to be a character.

At the shoot, Robert and Zach feel they're starting to see a different side of both Blake and Michael and that both are nailing their parts. Ali is more than comfortable playing the part of Katy Perry, while Shanna pushes through a horribly smelling dress in order to make sure they get the shot. Nellie looks like she wants to die of embarrassment when Erik asked her to lean back on the fruit display and Lily embodies no character but a larger than life version of herself, dancing around spastically for the cameras.

On a side note, did anyone else notice that the video made no sense whatsoever? Why were they just scanning a ton of fruit with no customers in the store? Since when do you scan produce? Have the mentors ever been to a grocery store?

After the video airs, the mentors let Ali know that she is first to be called back and it's deserved this week. Ali is theatrical, but it's the thing that gets her into trouble when it's time to be real. We'll see what she does next week. Blake, Shanna, and Aylin are also called back and surprisingly, Michael gets out of having to sing for his life. That leaves Nellie, Lily, and Abrham in this week's bottom three.

Nellie - "I'm The Only One" by Melissa Etheridge
It seems that when we get Nellie at her best is when she's in the bottom three fighting for her life. She sounds great and seems confident but the minute the song ends, she shrinks back into the scared little contestant that she's been all season. It's getting really old that the mentors have to beg her to come out of her shell. As Ryan points out, what part would he write for this person that stands before him week after week?

Abraham - "Stereo Hearts" by Gym Class Heroes and Adam Levine
I really like Abraham's voice a lot, even though his last chance performance was kind of bizarre - or at least, the way he presented himself was. He suddenly was acting like a diva and overly complimented Ryan, who wasn't buying it at all.

Lily - "Someone Like You" by Adele
When Lily found out she was singing this, she literally threw herself to the floor in excitement. I'm really over it. Her performance of this is over the top too, but she did sing it well and the mentors seemed to like it. When it came time for feedback though, she made excuses (as usual) and seemed to place blame on the mentors for giving confusing advice.

When the callback list is posted, it's Nellie who has been eliminated from the competition. I can't say that I'm surprised. They could only prod her so much to come out of her shell.
