Brandon Kane from The Real World: St. Thomas

by Gina Scarpa

It's clear this season on The Real World: St. Thomas that Brandon is different than everyone else in the house - but that's what makes him so interesting to watch. The tattooed bad boy from Boston with a dark past is one that the others haven't quite connected with yet. The roomies may not have gotten to know him well yet, but we took some time to do just that today in our exclusive interview with him about life in the Real World house.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What made you want to do The Real World?
A. Brandon: Well honestly, I'm not just saying this because I'm on it. It's been one of my favorite shows for a very long time. It's something I always wanted to be a part of. I was super excited to do so.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your reaction when you found out you were cast on the show and going to live on St. Thomas?
A. Brandon: I was super pumped about getting on the show but I wasn't excited to go to St. Thomas. The island life isn't really for me. I'm definitely a city boy and my concerns were that I'd go to an island and be the only thing like me. I ended up thoroughly enjoying it.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: It seemed like you fell for Laura immediately. Is that true or was it exaggerated in the edit?
A. Brandon: Oh yeah, for sure! Don't get me wrong. I think she was attractive but it's definitely exaggerated. I'm not one to catch feelings for girls. I'm the type to sleep with them and never talk to them again. She's a sweetheart but I don't know.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Is it weird to watch yourself on tv?
A. Brandon: I don't watch. I'll live stream with people but I can't watch myself. It's too awkward. I knew I wouldn't watch because I'm too paranoid. It's just one of those things. I critique myself so badly. To watch myself on tv is entirely too weird.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: There is certainly some drama right off the bat, like when Trey read your journal. How did you really feel about that?
A. Brandon: The fact that you're gonna grab my journal and you walked around like a 15 year old girl... there were big letters on the front that said "Brandon's Journal". If fighting was allowed in the house, I would've broke his nose and laughed at him. I was so mad!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When I talked to Swift, he said that you alienated yourself from the house but it kind of seems like they're not putting out an effort with you either.
A. Brandon: They definitely didn't... I'm not much of a people person anyway. I love meeting people, just not people like them. I judged them just like they judged me. I felt like I had nothing in common with them and had zero interest in getting to know them. I felt like they didn't have anything to bring to the table. I like having an actual conversation and it seemed like they couldn't hold their own.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Did you enjoy your time there?
A. Brandon: Yeah absolutely, but I would never do a Real World again. This season is definitely worth watching. You will definitely see bonds and connections made that are unexpected. However, I constantly felt like I had to compromise for them to fit into their world.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What kind of people do you hang out with?
A. Brandon: See, the funny thing is when you meet my friends... my friends really aren't that far off from Trey or Swift. I feel like a lot of them came from situations where things were handed to them. All of my friends are in the trades. We don't sit at a table that we're not bringing something to. The people I'm drawn to are people that have a better understanding about life. I'm very observant. I like to watch people interact and see how they deal with their everyday lives. I like more artsy people. I prefer tatted up girls as opposed to preppy girls and I definitely prefer people that listen to the same types of music I do. Music is something I'm passionate about and it's an easy icebreaker. But you don't need a certain image, you just have to have a certain mentality.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you stay in touch with your roommates?
A. Brandon: Yeah... yeah, I mean we definitely stay in touch. As far as events go, I don't wanna do the traditional Real World events. I wanna do tattoo conventions and be involved in tattoo magazines. I have love for every person in the house and I would stop what I was doing to be there for them but I definitely have intentions of bringing a different element.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Would you do a Challenge?
A. Brandon: I don't know if I would do a Challenge or not. I don't see why not. It would be something worth trying, for sure. I haven't though about what comes after. I'm focusing on my life, trying to get an apartment, and working.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: We're still getting to know you on the show but what do you want people to know about you?
A. Brandon: There's a lot more to me than my exterior. Yes, I love tattoos and piercings and prefer those types of people over preppy kids. At the same time, that doesn't mean I can't have a good intellectual conversation with someone. That doesn't mean I'm not into politics or my community. I'm definitely somebody... I appreciate company from all walks of life and can appreciate all sides of things. I think that the focus is entirely too much on me being different in the house but I very much enjoyed being by myself.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: So you weren't crying in the corner by yourself all season...
A. Brandon: No! A lot of times I was in my room reading the bible or writing in my journal or out exploring the island. I was very curious about the environment I was in. I was perfectly content to fly solo. I didn't wanna be coupled up with someone.
