The Glass House

by Kylene Hamulak

In case you've forgotten, Alex is the villain of The Glass House (so far at least). As we check back in with the contestants waiting to learn whether or not Alex will be returning, it's very obvious that they do not want him back. Kevin, who was one of the targets after he called Alex out for being inappropriate, wonders how even Alex's friends could not be embarrassed by his behavior.

Many of the other competitors (Joy in particular) seem emotionally distraught by the thought of him returning to the house. Gene and Erica try to comfort Joy as she breaks down in tears explaining that his words are going to hurt her mom, who has done so much to stick up for her.

When the Disembodied Voice tells the players that one of the guys in Limbo quit the game, the entire household starts throwing theories back and forth to determine who it is. They can't believe it's Jacob (or maybe they don't WANT to believe it), but they know Alex wasn't likely to leave the game either. As Jeffrey notes, he watched Jacob as he left the house wearing "a givey uppy" face.

As the contestants continue to wait for news on which - if any - of the contestants will be returning from Limbo, Kevin provides a pretty accurate portrayal of Alex in the game. Even down to talking through a creepy smile.

The players are called to the results, where their first bit of bad news is that Jacob had quit the game, leaving Alex's fate up to the viewers.

Though he rises up the tube to face the rest of the house, after a few tense moments, he is lowered once again, signifying the end of his time in The Glass House.

Obviously the other players are delighted with this news, which will be great until they remember now they have to beat EACH OTHER and not just Alex. Which happens even quicker than I thought, as Kevin and Mike step away from the crowd to discuss the fact that someone voted for Erica and cannot be trusted.

Apparently, the rogue vote is the talk of the house, as the subject is brought up at dinner. When Jeffrey assumes Holly was the one who cast the vote for Erica (which, of course, she WAS), Holly outright lies about voting for Alex. Holly's reasoning was that everyone else was voting for Alex, so she wanted to vote on her own. She does admit to Erica that she lied...but then she also called her "bro." Which was kind of awkward.

Also awkward and kind of irrelevant? When the ladies in the house call Holly in for a super serious "can we talk to you" moment, and then ask her about being an Art History major. Let me assure you - it's painfully obvious that Holly's history with art begins and ends with a box of Crayola crayons. So what does she do? She admits a) that she's not an Art History major b) that she's a bad liar and c) that she's actually a Psych major and didn't want to tell them that. Unfortunately for her, however, she doesn't seem to know too much more about psych than she did art history. ("Just give me one psychologist that you studied," begs Robin. "Ummm....Dr. Phil!" replies Holly.)

When the Disembodied Voice calls them to reveal the lowest two vote getters in the house, she also explains that those two people will be the captains for the teams, with the losing captain going to Limbo after the challenge. One by one, the pictures appear on the screen, with safe players disappearing. Ashley, Apollo and Holly are the final three photos remaining, but Holly is declared safe...meaning Ashley and Apollo will be team captains.

Ashley gets first pick for teams because she had a higher number of votes than Apollo. She begins by picking Kevin, following up with Stephanie, Joy, Andrea, and Jeffrey. Apollo's first pick is Holly, followed by Gene, Mike, Erica and Robin. There's some tension right off the bat with Team Apollo, as he walks in on what he THINKS is Gene sharing strategy with the other team, which Gene denies.

Team Ashley is the first to enter the arena, where the challenge "Ruffle Your Tail Feathers" awaits. The Disembodied Voice explains that the team members will be perched on "whirlybirds" and tossing eggs with the team's names into bird houses, each with a specific viewer-voted burden or benefit.

Once Team Ashley gets the hang of it, it runs smoothly. Because it's Ashley's birthday, the team tries to get her eggs in the positive benefits, which is a nice team gesture. Team Apollo has a bit more trouble getting the eggs to Gene in the air, and Apollo is wondering if he's deliberately sabotaging the game. Honestly, looking at him in that harness, I think it's more likely that he's just bad at it. Still, once they got the hang of it, they, too, get into a good groove.

Team Apollo ends up finishing in 5:54, while Team Ashley completed in 3:38, winning the challenge.

Knowing that he's headed to Limbo, Apollo begins strategizing immediately. He shares his feelings that Gene was sabotaging the challenge with Erica, who thinks he's just grasping at straws but asks Gene anyway. (Um, since when did we elect Erica to be the ADULT in The Glass House and just confront problems maturely?) Gene, of course, insists he did his best.

Moving on from that drama, Team Ashley was enjoying both the benefit and...well, the BURDENS of being on the winning team. Stephanie's burdens included squeezing orange juice by hand and transferring packing peanuts, Andrea had to blow up 500 balloons, and Jeffrey was tasked with peeling 200 hardboiled eggs.

As all of this is going on, Gene decides to call a house meeting and get his accusers to share why they believed he was sabotaging the game. Apollo is only too happy to make his points, which aren't really validated by anyone else. Joy tells him he's being paranoid, Holly is happy the drama is off of her, and Mike is really the only one who is on the fence about Gene.

The "Fanswers" this week aren't too intriguing - Holly wondered if viewers would vote her to stay in the house if she was in Limbo (yes), Stephanie learned it was better to be open about stories, an Apollo was told by viewers that they approved of him switching his strategy earlier than expected.

When the votes are cast, we see several of them go for Holly. As it turns out, Holly's vote was the only one for Erica - all ten of the remaining votes were cast for her, leaving her with Apollo in Limbo.

The unanimous nature of the voting in the first two episodes has been interesting, and I'm sure that'll change as the players begin strategizing a little bit more. Who did you think should join Apollo in Limbo? It's up to viewers now - cast your votes and see who'll return to the house!
