Dancing With the Stars Season 14

by Kylene Hamulak

As week three of Dancing With The Stars opens, there are tears before the dancers even get into the ballroom. Tonight's theme visits the most memorable year in each of our stars' lives, and Tom promises a night full of emotion.  Got your tissues handy? Let's begin...

Team: Jack and Anna
Dance: Samba
Jack chooses one of his own songs to showcase 2011, and I just naturally assumed it's because he's older than he thinks he is and couldn't remember too far. As it turns out, his story is one of reunion with his 23 year-old daughter, who had been put up for adoption and searched to find her birth father. At a concert. *pause* Um...best to move along... Personally, I could've done without the pelvic thrusting, but to each his own.  Judges said:
8 - Len tells us he took his happy pills - he liked the rhythm in Jack's hips and thought it was his best dance.
8 - Bruno calls the performance uplifting and joyful and thought Jack was in the "driving seat" tonight; "much better."
8 - Carrie Ann says he is effervescent in the way he performs; she wants to see more of him.
Score = 24
(Note: Brooke manages to get Jack awkwardly choked up, and I decide that awkward choke ups will signal tonight's (non-alcoholic, of course) drinking game.)

Team: Maria and Derek
Dance: Rhumba
Maria's story is dedicated to her parents (and also to various injuries causing her pain). She tells us she used to go to work with her parents and find quarters to put into a jukebox. The dance, to Material Girl, was definitely sensual, and I'm afraid I turned into an 8 year old when Derek did/did not kiss Maria. As in, I threw my hands to my eyes, giggled nervously, and then said "ewwww". What I saw looked like a good dance, but all I could think about was alerting a stagehand that Bruno probably needed to be hosed down. Judges said:
9 - Because he never disappoints, Bruno's critique began with the following exchange:
Bruno: I felt it.
Derek: I felt it too!
Bruno: I bet you did, naughty boy!

There. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, Bruno calls the routine incredibly difficult and tells Maria, "my hat to you my darling."
9 - Carrie Ann calls Maria an "exquisite dancer", complimenting her maturity, sensuality, and languid movement.
9 - Len describes the routine as "a mix of the ballroom and a touch of the bedroom" and an overall fabulous dance.

In Brooke's interview, we're reminded that Maria is dancing with both a broken rib and hurt feet (wait, what? Hurt feet? When did that happen?), but we're also treated to clips from her Wrestlemania appearance this weekend. Which seems like something you maybe shouldn't do with a broken rib and hurt feet.
Score = 27

Team: Gladys and Tristan
Dance: Fox Trot
Gladys chooses 1957, the year of The Pips first nationwide tour with an all-star lineup of Motown stars, including Sam Cooke. Their routine to Cupid is pleasant, and we all know by now that I love Tristan and the "Elegant Empress," so it should be no surprise that I think they're kind of adorable. Judges said:
8 - Carrie Ann notes improvement in Gladys' frame this week; "You dance like you sing - it's sensual and soulful and rich and divine!" Yeah....what she said.
8 - Len realizes the work and dedication it takes dance, and says he admires her. He also notes that her frame is getting better.
8 - Bruno tells Gladys she was absolutely gorgeous, dancing with such grace and finesse.
Score = 24

Team: Roshon and Chelsie
Dance: Samba
Roshon's inspiration is 1996, marking his first time seeing Michael Jackson on stage. MJ is his hero, so Chelsie surprises Roshon with one of MJ's own choreographers for their routine. The dance looks cool with the interjection of Jackson elements, but for me? It felt a little manic, like they were trying just too much. There's no denying the kid has talent, but sometimes less is more. Judges said:
8 - Len liked the exuberance, flare and "devil may care attitude", but notes that he would've liked more traditional Samba. He compliments Roshon for always coming out and giving 100%.
9 - Bruno thinks that MJ would've loved the performance, and so does Bruno.
8 - Carrie Ann calls it a great tribute to MJ, but doesn't think it was their best dance. She notes that the transitions threw off timing.
Score = 25

Team: Gavin and Karina
Dance: Rhumba
Gavin chose Billy Joel's New York State of Mind, and it's all about how much his parents supported him when he decided that performing was what he wanted to do. Karina tells him she believes this could be HIS dance. He began the routine at the piano, and he had a smile on his face throughout - I really liked the dance. Whether it was his scare at the bottom last week or just the inspiration this week, he seemed comfortable for once. Judges said:
8 - Bruno: "You've got hips! And you can move them!" He tells Gavin he's getting better all the time.
8 - Carrie Ann describes her heart as "fluttery." She loved it, and she has Gavin fever.
8 - Len tells us what he saw in Gavin's dance: good hips, more musicality through arms, progression week after week.

Awkward choke up #2 with Brooke comes now, and I gotta admit: Gavin is the first one to get me. YOU GOT ME, GAVIN. Someone get me a tissue.
Score = 24

Team: Katherine and Mark
Dance: Waltz
Katherine gets about four words of her story out before the tears come again. She chose 1996 as her memorable year, as it's the year she said goodbye to her dad. And then she chooses a Josh Groban song, and the dance floor looks like heaven and they're just waltzing across the clouds like angels and I...I...I just need a moment... Judges said:
10 - Carrie Ann tells Katherine that her dad is smiling down upon her. She describes the dance as "magic," and says it was like she had two partners.
9 - Len states the obvious, that she danced with grace and elegance, but warns Mark that there was not quite enough dancing in ballroom hold.
10 - Bruno: "SENSATIONAL. And that's it." That's a direct quote.

Then the 10s came and my tears dried up because I refuse to make this too easy for her.
Score = 29

Team: Sherri and Val
Dance: Rhumba
Sherri's story is all about her miracle baby Jeffrey, born with a very bleak prognosis at 25 weeks. I was fine watching all of this until Jeffrey came running in as Val's way of reminding her why she was dancing. Then I was done. I honestly don't know how she got through her routine because her story was all over her face, but somehow she did. Judges said:
8 - Len tells her he appreciated her emotion and thought it was really heartfelt; "well done."
8 - Bruno thought it was very deeply felt and well-expressed. He also felt that she was going to lose it at any moment, but she didn't, and she did a great job. I guess she showed us both, Bruno.
8 - Carrie Ann loves that she's so true to herself and notes that her lines were the best she's seen.

Then came Brooke's interview, where Sherri got choked up and started speaking in a pitch I couldn't quite understand. That's three, if you're counting.
Score=24

Team: Melissa and Maks
Dance: Jive
When Melissa chooses 2010 as her year, she tells us how she broke her back in a fall and was using a walker after surgery, never thinking she'd be able to dance. When we pull out to the shot of Maks, I imagine that he's stifling laughter with a thought bubble over his head saying "well, about that dancing..." Melissa does pretty well with the jive, and we've got an open shirt on Maks, so that's good. Judges said:
8 - Bruno declares: "Melissa is on a mission to put the raunch into the jive!" He notes that she danced with Maks beautifully.
8 - Carrie Ann loved it, calling her dynamic, and seeing no nerves tonight.
8 - Len says, "You have come into the competition; well done."
Score= 24

Team: Jaleel and Kym
Dance: Rhumba
So... Urkel's defining moment was becoming Stefan Urquelle. At this point, I'm feeling pretty confident that I can put my tissues away. The routine is smooth and interesting, but I'm completely distracted by theories on how Kym's dress isn't falling off her body.  Judges said:
9 - Carrie Ann begins by saying, "Bye bye Urkel, hello Stefan!" I hope she realized she only gets to use that once this season, and she just wasted it.
8 - Len described it as a confident performance, but cautioned that it was a little stiff in the arms.
8 - Bruno: "You play it cool, you play it well, you play it smooth."

There's been some gossip about Jaleel this week, so I'm not really sure how to respond to what happened with Brooke, besides that it was awkward choke up #4. He compared Urkel to Mickey Mouse, then made a declaration that he loves entertaining people, and said he just wanted to complete this week. Wait...why is he crying?
Score= 25

Team: William and Cheryl
Dance: Salsa
William chooses 1995 and tells his story of coming to America, where he ate apples for the first time and thought butter was ice cream that didn't melt. Oh, William...stay pretty. The routine starts with bongos and has a shirt ripped open within seconds. Good - looks like Cheryl got my memo. Judges said:
9 - Len tells William he conquered the salsa.
9 - Bruno beckons William closer to tell him, "I HATE YOU - that was AMAZING!"
10 - Carrie Ann says, "You are ridiculous, that was ridiculously hot!"
Score =28

Team: Donald and Peta
Dance: Rhumba
Donald's dance is dedicated to his best friend, who fell victim to cancer in 2010. This pair is consistently good, so it really wasn't a surprise that they performed a beautiful dance tonight. Also: any complaints about Donald's shirt? Yeah, didn't think so. Judges said:
9 - Carrie Ann calls his passion mesmerizing and says she was truly touched.
8 -Len did not expect a "hunky dunky football guy" to dance with such emotion; really top notch performance.
9 - Bruno likes that he pushes himself to the limit every time and predicts this will come down to "a battle of the hunks."

And then the Hunky Dunky Football Guy got so choked up he froze when Brooke tried to talk to him. Five, guys. That's five.
Score = 26

Hard to say who goes home with five pairs tied at the bottom and no one really failing on the dance floor. I'm going to put a guess out there and go with Roshon, Melissa, and Gladys in the bottom three, but that's only because they didn't cry. I think the win for the night goes to Brooke, who managed to get five of the eleven dancers choked up and then survived several seconds of dead air sticking her mic into the face of an obviously verklempt star.

Well done, Brooke. See you all here tomorrow with the results.
