The Voice Season 2

by Todd Betzold

The battles are half over on The Voice and we have seen some amazing performances by all the teams, but we are about to be shocked with a first on the battles tonight...or so the previews claim.

Team Adam: Pip vs. Nathan Parrett - "You Know I'm No Good" by Amy Winehouse
Four chairs turned around for Pip versus only Adam turning around for Nathan...they're playing it out like this is a no-brainer for Pip to win...will that happen? Pip meets Adam and his mentor, Alanis Morissette. They tell him to not oversing...just be simple. Adam brings in Robin Thicke to mentor Nathan and they said his biggest demon to tackle is being confident in himself. One more rehearsal before the battle, Nathan has come back and Adam said it is a level playing field now. It was a good battle...Nathan did a good job, but Pip just outshined him...he hit bigger and better notes. The coaches have mixed favorites, but Adam chooses Pip to move onto the live shows for Team Adam.

Team Cee Lo: Erin Martin vs. The Shields Brothers - "What's Love Got To Do With It" by Tina Turner
It's the former model versus the rocker brothers...this should be interesting. This is an awkward battle...the brothers are overpowering and Erin is very soft-spoken. Cee Lo brings in Babyface to mentor The Shields Brothers...it started rough, but they told them to pull back and show their vulnerability. For Erin, Cee Lo brings in NeYo to mentor her. They told her she is attractive, but she is not sexy...NeYo said I'm looking at you and you're cute, but there's plenty of cute out there. To me, this was terrible...I don't understand half the words Erin says and the boys just rocked out and it was just awkward the whole song. Adam said it best...that was so weird. Christina loved it though. Cee Lo feels the one he has the most prospect with is Erin, so she moves on to the live shows with Team Cee Lo.

Team Christina: Ashley De La Rosa vs. Jonathas - "No Air" by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown
It's a battle of the youthful feel on the stage and a love story song for them to take on. Christina brings in Lionel Richie and they told him to not forget to remain in your character when Ashley is singing...connect with her. For Ashley, Christina brings in Jewel to mentor her. Jewel said Jonathas sounds so much like Usher, but people want someone new and this is her chance to show them that new singer. I am a little disappointed in this battle...there was no connection between the two singers. They each had good moments, but I feel he is Usher and we have an Usher already, so I want Ashley to move on. Adam, Blake and Cee Lo all would pick Ashley to win and Christina agrees, as Ashley moves on to the live shows with Team Christina.

Team Blake: ALyX vs. Jermaine Paul - "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" by Billy Ocean
Blake thinks they are both very serious singers, but with this song he wants to see them have fun and the person who has the most fun will move onto the live shows. He brings in Miranda to work with ALyX. She tells her to let loose and come out of her shell and add that sassiness. For Jermaine, Blake brings in Kelly Clarkson to mentor him. They tell him not to underestimate ALyX...you never know what she might do during the performance. Jermaine gets a voicemail from his daughter before the battle to wish him...just what he needed. And it worked, because he owned that stage...he made that song his own and outshined ALyX. She was too serious while he was having fun up there. It was clear to all the coaches and to Blake, as he moves Jermaine onto the live shows for Team Blake.

Team Adam: Angel Taylor vs. Katrina Parker - "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis
During the rehearsal, Adam tells them they need to stick with the program and not embellish...more about the vulnerability of the song. Adam brings in Robin Thicke to mentor Angel. Robin tells her she needs to feel the lyrics and tell the audience what this song means to her. For Katrina, Adam brings in Alanis Morissette to mentor her. They tell her to be nervous...it's ok...just let it happen. For this one, I think Katrina was just singing and it came natural for her...I feel Angel was trying too hard and struggled through the song. Again, all the coaches pick one person...Katrina. Adam agrees and picks Katrina to move onto the live shows for Team Adam.

Team Blake: Gwen Sebastian vs. Erin Willett - "We Belong" by Pat Benatar
Gwen gave up starting a family to pursue music and Erin's father is battling cancer and Erin wants to see her finally make it. Blake brings in Miranda to mentor Gwen...she is ecstatic. They tell her they need to take that emotion she is portraying and make the audience feel it too. For Erin, Blake brings in Kelly Clarkson to mentor her. They told her if she's got it, then show it...don't hold back on the soft side. Erin gets a call from her mother that things have turned bad for her father and he was given 24 hours...he wants her to stay and she deserves this and Blake gets it...a touching moment and why I love Blake so much...a great guy. This one is going to be super tough because I enjoy them both. They both did very well and give each other a strong embrace afterwards...ugh, I feel sorry for Blake. Finally, mixed votes from the coaches and it is up to Blake...he picks Erin to move on and represent Team Blake in the live shows...bring on the tears!
