The Voice Season 2: Battle Rounds

by Todd Betzold

We are back for Week 2 of the Battle Rounds on The Voice and it is bound to get even more intense as the signers fight to make it on to the live shows in just a few weeks.

Team Christina: Geoff McBride vs. Sera Hill - "Chain Of Fools" by Aretha Franklin
It's the battle of the powers here, as the big voices go head-to-head. I think I am going to love this battle and so sad to see one of them go home. Sera is worried about the power of his voice, so she said she is going to have to pull out the diva card even more. Christina brings in Lionel to mentor Geoff for the battle. They said they need to see the personality and character to go with that voice. For Sera, Christina brought in Jewel to work with her. They said if she can bring more emotion she can win it. This was a great battle...Sera had so much sass to go with that voice...I loved it. Geoff held his own, but I think she has more of a stage presence. Cee Lo and Adam go with Geoff, but Sera turns on Blake and he goes with her. Christina loves them both and loves the growth they have shown her, but she chooses Sera to join Team Christina for the live shows.

Team Blake: Charlotte Sometimes vs. Lex Land - "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster The People
Blake chose this battle because of the personalities...Charlotte is extroverted and Lex is introverted. If Lex doesn't come out of her shell, then Charlotte will eat her alive. Blake brings in Kelly Clarkson to work with Charlotte. They tell her to tone it down a little and focus on the singing. For Lex, Blake brings in his wife, Miranda Lambert, to mentor her. They think the song is a perfect choice for Lex and she just needs to be Lex on stage and she can win this. On the way to the battle, Lex gets a voicemail from Miranda wishing her luck...I think this is so amazing of Miranda to do. They both have very unique voices...I like that Lex hit some high notes and I would go with her. Christina said Lex had a sexy voice, which I agree with. Blake said Lex had some pitch issues at the beginning and Charlotte was perfect, but she didn't take the risks that Lex did...in the end, he chooses Charlotte to join Team Blake in the live finals.

Team Cee Lo: Sarah Golden vs. Juliet Simms "Stay With Me" by Rod Stewart
Juliette says that she has been called the female Rod Stewart, so she feels confident. Juliet is feeling very confident and maybe a little cocky, but Sarah said this is what she does...take songs and make them her own and I believe she will. The next day, she meets with Cee Lo and her mentor Babyface to discuss things. They like her rendition and want her to stay true to herself. Juliet gets to meet with Cee Lo and her mentor, NeYo, which he tells her to pick her spots...not bring out the big guns right at the very beginning and go down from there...it must grow. Juliet bothers me and her overconfidence is annoying, so I am rooting for Sarah. The song is very fitting for Juliet and she overpowers Sarah, but I think Sarah is better. Adam loves Juliet, but Blake thought Sarah was the winner with her vocals. Cee Lo would love to have them both, but he chooses Juliet to join Team Cee Lo for the live shows.

Team Adam: Whitney Myer vs. Kim Yarbrough - "No More Drama" by Mary J. Blige
Another powerhouse battle and Whitney says that Kim's house is bigger than hers. The age difference is going to play a big part in this and I think Kim is going to eat her up. Adam brings in Alanis Morissette to work with Whitney. They told her to be present and not try to overpower Kim...she is very worried about what she needs to do to beat Kim. Adam brings in Robin Thicke to work with Kim, which makes her all giddy. This song is so emotional and at 50 years old, Kim has the experiences in life to make this song amazing. They want to hear the build-up and build the tension. That was an amazing battle and I feel it seemed Whitney was trying to win and Kim it just came naturally. Blake felt like he was watching one of the Diva concerts they have...he wouldn't know what he would do, so he would choose Carson. Christina and Cee Lo both pick Kim and Adam agrees, so Kim will be moving on with Team Adam to the live shows.

Team Christina: Lee Koch vs. Lindsey Pavao - "Heart-Shaped Box" by Nirvana
They are both indie-type, but Nirvana is one of Lindsey's favorite bands and Lee hasn't heard the song in years, so she comes out more prepared to begin with. The next day, Lee works with Christina and his mentor Jewel. They said he needs to understand the lyrics himself and feel them and he needs to pronounce the lyrics more clearly. Then Lindsey meets with Christina and Lionel Richie to work on her performance. They said they know she feels the song in her head, but she needs to bring that out for people to see and she needs to work on her stage presence. They both have really weird, different voices and I felt Lee got the emotional side of the song and I liked that. Christina is a fan of both of them, but she chooses Lindsey to join Team Christina in the live shows.

Team Cee Lo: Jamar Rogers vs. Jamie Lono - "I Want To Know What Love Is" by Foreigner
They've been friends since day one, so this is going to be hard for them and I love them both, so it is going to be hard for me to watch. Jamie had some nerves when him and Jamar rehearsed, but then he meets with Cee Lo and Babyface the next day. His voice keeps cracking and they are worried if he will have the confidence to make it through the song. Jamar gets to work with Cee Lo and NeYo the next day and they want him to focus more on the emotion and less on the technicality of the song. I love Jamie, but Jamar owned this and the emotion he showed during this performance. They all felt the song wasn't for Jamie and Cee Lo agrees, as he picks Jamar to move on for Team Cee Lo on the live shows. They both shed some major tears backstage, which leads to my tears...ugh, I almost made it through the whole show too!
