American Idol Season 11

by Todd Betzold

The guys took the stage last night on American Idol and tonight it is time for the Top 12 girls to show America why they deserve to be in your final Top 13...will a girl finally win it for the first time in five years?

Chelsea Sorrell - "Cowboy Casanova" by Carrie Underwood
Country girl living in a town with one stoplight, wants to make everyone proud in her hometown. She does good, but it was just her singing the song...nothing different...didn't make it her own. Randy said strong vocals, but we've seen Carrie and it's hard to compare to that.

Erika Van Pelt - "What About Love" by Heart
Can the mobile deejay stop playing the music and start singing it? She goes with the power ballad and sings it decent, but nothing spectacular...go big or go home and I think it was too safe. Steven loved her confidence and loved how she hit the notes. Jennifer felt like she could have gone even higher and told her to let loose next time.

Jen Hirsch - "One And Only" by Adele
Now she has been one of my early favorites ever since I saw her audition and when Ryan said she was singing Adele I got really nervous...you can't take on that woman, but she held her own. She hit some very big notes and sang a great song. Jennifer said she was the first one to come out here and let loose and felt the feeling in the song. Randy said he thinks she's one of the greatest singers in the competition this year.

Brielle Von Hugel - "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay" by Otis Redding
Not gonna lie...I was not a fan of Brielle before tonight. Her and her mother bothered me during Hollywood Week, but after this performance I may like her a little. She made it her own and it was very enjoyable. Jennifer said she was a true performer and she eats it up...she understands what it means to entertain.

Hallie Day - "Feeling Good" by Michael Buble
This is another one of those songs that is a huge risk to take on, but I enjoyed it. I like Hallie and she has a strong voice and hit some big notes. Steven said she has an old-fashioned voice and that's coming back and Adele proved that and he thinks she is going to be a part of that.

Skylar Laine - "Stay With Me" by Faces
The second country girl in the Top 12 and I feel she outshined Chelsea tonight. She had a ton of energy on that stage and rocked it out...country style. I really liked it and she is fighting to stay in this competition. Randy said she is the rockin' country girl...it's like Reba mixed with Kelly or Tina.

Baylie Brown - "Amazed" by Lonestar
Do we have a third country girl in the Top 12? She has good vocals, but this was just boring to me. There were never any wow moments. Jennifer said it didn't seem like she had total control...it was just a little shaky all the way through...you could've had a better moment.

Hollie Cavanagh - "Reflection" by Christina Aguilera
Hollie wasn't shown much in the auditions and tonight she showed why she is in Top 12 girls...amazing voice who can hit and hold some amazing notes. This was a great performance and she moved up my favorites chart. Jennifer said she is going to be one of our front-runners.

Haley Johnsen - "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics
She had a couple moments that showed why she was chosen for the Top 12 girls, otherwise this was a train wreck. I did not enjoy it all and bad song choice. Steven loved the way she acted on stage and that's the half of it. Randy said it was a bit of a nightmare instead of a dream (to many boos from the audience).

Shannon Magrane - "Go Light Your World" by Kathy Trocoli
This started out really slow to me, but she picked it up as the song went on. I just feel it's another safe choice...put it all out there, don't be safe. Jennifer said she sings with such passion for a 16-year-old...so beautiful to watch.

Jessica Sanchez - "Love You I Do" by Jennifer Hudson
She has been sick and on vocal rest, but that rest must have been a good thing because she belted out a great performance and ended the song on an amazing note. For such a tiny little thing, she has a huge voice...indeed a front-runner. Randy said he don't know about no doctor, but that girl can sing.

Elise Testone - "One And Only" by Adele
So, here we are at our third contestant singing an Adele song and not only singing an Adele song, but the same song Jen Hirsch sang...ugh. Of all the songs that have been made, we have to choose the same song? She starts out playing the piano and kicks it in later. I liked her version...you could feel the emotion as she sang...I liked it. Jennifer said that she hopes America got it, because she is one to watch.

The Top 13 are revealed tomorrow night on American Idol at 8/7c on FOX.
