The Voice Season 2: Blind Auditions

by Todd Betzold

We are at the midway part of The Voice, as Team Adam has seven acts and Team Cee Lo, Team Christina and Team Blake all have six acts on their teams. As the coaches look to finish their teams they are getting more and more picky and looking only for the best.

Up first tonight is Ducky...yup, a 26-year-old man named Ducky. He's the first one to feel the pain of the picky judges. He sang very well, but none of the coaches turned around. It might be a rough night for the singers.

Will Jonathas get the coaches to breakdown and turn around? Cute kids and family with him, so I think he will do amazing. He not only sings just like Usher, he breaks out into some pretty good dance moves as well. He was able to get Cee Lo and Christina and they start fighting for him. He can sing and he has the looks...they want him on their team. He decides to join Team Christina.

Monique Benabou is joining us with her parents, including her mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer when Monique was 12. Now Monique is doing this all for her parents. She sings well and after the guidance of Blake, Christina turns around and is the only one to do so, so another member for Team Christina...that's two more tonight.

Carson goes out and visits a street performer, Naia Kete, in Hollywood to give her her invitation for the blind auditions. Will she come through with a powerful performance? She has a voice just like Xenia from last season, so naturally Blake turns around right away. Cee Lo eventually joins him, so a battle between them two. Blake said she looks and sounds unique and looks like she has her own ideas and he wants to hear those...he just wrapped that up. And he did, as she chooses Team Blake.

We first meet Charlotte Sometimes, who had throat surgery as a child and was not supposed to sing again, but her she is auditioning for The Voice. Before we hear her, we get to look at Erick Macek, a Russian import looking for the American dream. Blake came close, but such luck for Erick as no coaches turned around. Now time for Charlotte to shine and shine she does...unique voice and all four coaches turned to get that on their team. Another singer sounding like Xenia and choosing Team Blake.

Tony Vincent, a Broadway star, comes to the stage now having much experience on stage on Broadway and singing with the band Queen. Of course, he comes out and sings "We Are The Champions" by Queen and sings it amazingly well. Cee Lo is the only one to turn around, so he will be joining Team Cee Lo.

Anthony Evans, the son of a preacher, has felt the pressure all his life of having to be someone...now he is trying to show America that you can be yourself and be successful. It went right to the end, where Cee Lo went to push it and stopped, but Christina hit it and snatched him up...another addition for Team Christina.

The X Factor had the burrito maker in Josh Krajcik and now The Voice has the sandwich maker in Jamie Lono. He gets Adam to turn around right away and Cee Lo joins him soon after. A great voice, soulful...I enjoyed him. Cee Lo suggests they hook-up because he likes to eat sandwiches! A very humble kid and I really like him and he goes with Team Cee Lo...one of my early favorites.

Having been preparing for his whole life, Dylan Chambers is up next. His mother is a vocal coach and now is his chance to see if the lessons he's had his whole life have paid off. He did decent and I can see him on Broadway, but no luck on The Voice. That starts a trend of singers not making it through...not everyone gets through.

In this business it's all about who you know...for Justin Hopkins, he knows Carson (he was in the house band on Last Call with Carson Daly) and now he gets an audition on The Voice. He wanted to work with Cee Lo and Cee Lo was the only one to turn around...his dreams were answered...another addition for Team Cee Lo.

Nicolle Galyon is a country singer trying to prove that a piano can be welcome on the country scene, not only a guitar. She has her little brother backstage rooting her on and when Adam turns around the little brother starts jumping up and down and eventually he started tearing up and so did I...so cute! So, she joins Team Adam.

Some more quick additions: Ashley De La Rosa for Team Christina, Jordan Rager and ALyX for Team Blake and Karla Davis for Team Adam.

Mathai, whose Dad is a psychiatrist, Mom is a nurse and brother is in medical school, it is expected for her to be in school for some health profession, so this is not right for their traditional family. Before we hear her, we get to see Eric Tipton...a big, white soul singer (Season 2 Nakia?). He won't get a chance to prove himself, as no judges turn around.

Now it is time for Mathai to prove she should be singing and not going to medical school. Apparently singing is for her (I wasn't a huge fan), but Blake, Adam and Cee Lo all turned around. The boys all lay it on pretty thick trying to get her to choose them. She decides to join Team Adam.

The Voice airs Mondays at 8/7c on NBC.
