The Bachelor 16: Episode 5

by Gina Scarpa

Last night's episode of The Bachelor takes us to Puerto Rico, where Nicki gets the first one on one date of the evening. She and Ben arrive in Old San Juan via helicopter (of course) where it starts to downpour. Ben feels that Nicki's ability to adapt to their rained out date shows how good she'd be in a relationship. Reaching a bit on that one, buddy.

After changing into dry clothing, the head back out and happen to catch a wedding taking place outside of a church. Nice planning, ABC! Over dinner, she opens up about her divorce and how much she learned from it. Though he hasn't spent a ton of time with her, Ben has seemed interested in Nicki from the beginning so she heads hom with a rose in hand.

For the group date, Lindzi, Courtney, Jennifer, Kacie B, Emily, Rachel, Casey S, Jamie, and Blakeley head to a baseball stadium. They split into two when uninvited guest Chris Harrison shows up and drops the bomb that they'll be playing a baseball game, where the losing team gets to head home and the winning team gets to continue the date at a romantic beach party. With an uneven number of girls, Ben picks Lindzi to play on both teams, which means she's automatically moving on to the beach party round.

The game goes into extra innings (hey, some of them were actually good!) and the red team pulls out the victory in the end. Lindzi, Courtney, Kacie B, Jamie, and Casey S head to the beach while the other girls cry on the bus ride home. At the beach, Ben pulls Kacie B aside and reassures her with a rose while Courtney sinks her claws into him immediately afterwards and promises to go skinny dipping with Ben very soon.

The next one on one goes to Elyse, who finally gets her chance to connect with Ben. If you can believe, she's only been on one date so far and it was a group date. If it were me, I would've packed my bags but she held out hope. I'll give it to her. After a fun little outing on a yacht, they sit down to dinner where he realizes that they're too far behind to catch up to where he is with other women. As he puts her on a boat home, you have to wonder why, if he was so intrigued with her as he claimed he was, he didn't try to spend more time with her before now.

When Ben arrives back at his room, he finds Courtney outside of his room and she makes good on that skinny dipping promise. He claims he felt like crap afterwards, but he sure didn't when he was in the water, did he?

At the rose ceremony, Blakeley puts it all out there and tells him how much she really likes Ben, which is music to his ears. Emily apologizes for bringing up Courtney to him at the last cocktail party, then proceeds to bring her up again. She's told to drop it and is basically given a warning to "be careful". Is anyone else not a fan of the way he treats her?

Roses are handed out to Lindzi, Jamie, Rachel, Courtney, Casey S, Blakeley, and last but not least, Emily. It's absolutely shocking that Jennifer is sent home, given her date in Park City the week before and oh yeah, the fact that he was JUST KISSING HER minutes earlier at the party. What the heck was that all about?!

The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
